Novel form of type II collagen shown to visibly reduce signs of aging, study finds
29 Aug 2019 --- BioCell Collagen can visibly reduce common signs of skin aging in women, a new peer-reviewed study published in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine has found. In just 12 weeks, researchers found visible improvements in a more youthful skin appearance in participants, based on wrinkle width, skin elasticity and cutaneous collagen content. The findings bolster collagen’s beneficial properties profile for applications in skincare.
Because of their healthy aging capabilities, collagen and hyaluronic acid are becoming increasingly popular supplements for a range of applications, including cosmetics and dietary supplements.
The double-blind trial was placebo-controlled and measured results from 113 women aged 39-59. Study participants supplemented their diets with BioCell Collagen’s 500 mg capsules twice daily and followed a uniform skincare routine.
Participants’ skin was visually graded monthly to determine the efficacy of the novel hydrolyzed cartilage extract found in BioCell. Measurements of facial lines and wrinkles, definition of crow’s feet lines, level of skin texture, smoothness and skin tone were all taken into account. Participants taking BioCell daily were found to have:
- Increased skin collagen content by 12 percent.
- Reduced facial lines and wrinkles.
- Reduced width of crow’s feet and wrinkles compared to placebo.
- Improved skin elasticity compared to the placebo group.
- No adverse reactions during the study.
BioCell Collagen is positioning its ingredient as a key component to a healthy aging routine. BioCell Collagen is composed of a naturally occurring matrix of hydrolyzed collagen type-II (≧ 300 mg), chondroitin sulfate (≧ 100 mg) and hyaluronic acid (≧ 50 mg). “With age, levels of collagen and hyaluronic acid in the skin decline which, over time, result in visible signs of skin aging such as wrinkles and sagging skin. Yet not all collagen and hyaluronic acid ingredients are created equal. It’s important for consumers to look to ingredients that can provide multidimensional skin nutrition support and are supported by human clinical trials, like the new study on BioCell Collagen,” advises Dr. Alexander Schauss, a co-author of the study.
BioCell Collagen is positioning its flagship ingredient as a key component to a healthy aging routine and an alternative to invasive strategies. “Those who are considering procedures to address signs of aging in skin should know their options. This substantive study adds to a body of evidence and years of study that show how the dietary supplement ingredient BioCell Collagen can be used as part of a skin health routine for people who are looking for more subtle and natural improvements in their appearance,” Suhail Ishaq, President of BioCell Technology.
Collagen sector plump with opportunity
NPD of collagen is increasingly popular as studies have supported its role in promoting active joints, youthful-looking skin and healthy connective tissues. Type II collagen has garnered attention for its ability to rebuild of cartilage by using the body’s natural repair mechanism in the joints.
Earlier this month, Advanced Protein Technology launched a range of instantized collagen with on-the-go potential. This innovation puts collagen peptides through an agglomerator which binds the peptides to water, gums or starches. Instantized collagen has improved mixing capabilities, which makes them easily incorporated into convenient and on-the-go products.

This 2018 document discusses scientific & clinical research on BioCell Collagen: a dietary ingredient that contains a highly bioavailable, naturally occurring matrix of hydrolyzed type II collagen, chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid (HA). The science supports both joint and skin health.
