Kemin launches hemp CBD distillates with low THC levels
16 Jun 2022 --- Kemin Industries is stepping into the hemp cannabidoil (CBD) space unveiling Luxiva, two lines of distillates. Backed with organic certification by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), the launch taps into health and wellness demands.
“Kemin ingredients are made in facilities with third-party good manufacturing practices certification and products that conform to the law and requirements governing hemp to help customers get new products to market quickly,” says Tyler Holstein, global product manager, Kemin Human Nutrition and Health.
The line includes two new products that are USDA-certified organic and fully traceable to hemp farms in the Midwest US.
“They provide the added benefit of certification by a credible source, something CBD consumers look for when making their purchase decisions,” Holstein adds.
Low in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and high in CBD, Luxiv Full Spectrum CBD Distillate (0.3%) and Luxiv Full Spectrum Cannabidiol (CBD) Distillate (0.1%) both contain a minimum of 60% CBD content, organic hemp extract from stems, leaves and flowers of Cannabis Sativa.
The difference between the two is the percentage of THC. The first product has a THC content less than 0.3%., and the latter less than 0.1%.
Kemin outlines that the distillates draw benefits from all parts of the hemp plant, which contains cannabinoids, flavonoids and terpenes.
The substances are extracted in a clean, solvent-free and environmentally friendly process. The product is vegan and kosher, making it consumable to a large population.
Importance of THC restriction
The CBD industry is increasing rapidly as more than half of the population in the EU is in favor of legalizing cannabis products in a government-regulated manner.
According to Nutrition Business Journal, the retail hemp-derived CBD market is “booming” and currently valued at US$803 million, expected to grow to US$1.2 billion next year.
Experts have previously told NutritionInsight about the intoxicating effects of THC and that CBD does not bring the same “sluggishness” the morning after consumption as THC does.
The US Food and Drug Administration has previously sent out warnings to several companies for misbranding and using THC in products. Companies have branded their products as CBD, and then later, it was discovered that there was a high amount of THC, defined as unsafe to consume.
