Kabrita goat milk infant formula meets all FDA parameters for entering the market
10 Jan 2024 --- Following several years of clinical testing, Kabrita has met all FDA requirements in the US for its goat milk-based infant formula and can bring it to market. The approval endorses the safety of the formula and that it meets the standards for complete nutrition for a baby’s growth in its first year.
“Bringing Kabrita’s goat milk-based infant formula to the US was not a rushed decision. While goat milk infant formula was made available during the 2022 US formula shortage via the FDA’s enforcement discretion, Kabrita chose to wait to make our product available until it met all FDA requirements, which means that Kabrita is here to stay,” says Dr. Elieke Kearns, director of medical and scientific affairs at Kabrita US.
“We believe our product is the safest goat milk-based infant formula on the market, backed by years of clinical trials, peer-reviewed research and extensive FDA clearances.”
About 48.5% of parents using formula during the 2022 US infant formula shortage resorted to potentially harmful feeding methods, such as watering down the formula, using expired or homemade formula or using human milk from informal sharing. Before the shortage, this figure amounted to 8%, according to US researchers.
Endorsing goat milk proteins
The American Academy of Pediatrics recently formally recommended goat milk infant formula as acceptable nutrition for non-breastfed or breastfed infants needing formula supplementation in the first year of life.
Research shows that goat milk proteins are more similar to breast milk proteins than those from cow milk, making them easier to digest. Goat milk also contains significantly more natural oligosaccharides than cow’s milk, the third most significant component of breast milk.
“As a pediatrician, I highly recommend Kabrita’s goat milk-based infant formula as a safe and nourishing option for babies during the first year of life,” says Dr. Ari Brown, chief medical advisor for Kabrita US, pediatrician and bestselling author of the Baby 411 series.
“Goat milk infant formula has been beloved by parents around the world, and finally, parents in the US can feed their babies with a trusted product, based on the highest quality Dutch goat milk that is legally imported to the US.”
According to Kabrita, it can maintain consistent product production, giving parents peace of mind the infant formula is here for their baby’s entire feeding trajectory.
Natural oligosaccharides
Kabrita US is a division of Dutch company Ausnutria and its infant formula undergoes a strict safety process that includes more than 90 quality checks. The goat milk is collected from more than 100 farms in the Netherlands.
Kabrita’s infant formula contains natural oligosaccharides for healthy digestion and immunity, essential vitamins and minerals and a premium fat blend that more closely resembles the fat profile of breast milk, which reduces crying and improves sleep.
The formula also contains docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (ARA) to boost vision and brain development. It is free of corn syrup, genetically modified organisms, glyphosate and maltodextrin.
In other industry breakthroughs, Danone developed a baby formula with large, milk phospholipid-coated lipid droplets inspired by the structure, size and composition of lipid globules found in breast milk. Like breast milk, the structure allows digestion, absorption and nutrient utilization.
Meanwhile, researchers recommend spacing samples over time in a stratified sampling pattern to catch risky pathogens like Cronobacter sakazakii in infant formula powder rather than random sampling during production. Taking more samples, even smaller ones can increase the power to detect contamination.
