Health Canada’s NNHPD certifies PLT Health Solutions’ cognitive health claims
29 Apr 2024 --- PLT Health Solutions was granted the license from the Natural and Non-Prescription Health Products Directorate (NNHPD) of Health Canada for its Nutricog Cognitive Performance Complex. The patented ingredient was shown in a clinical trial to facilitate significant improvements compared to a placebo across multiple cognitive domains, including learning, memory, sustained attention, working memory and executive function.

The list of claims approved by Health Canada also outlines that Nutricog helps to support working memory and immediate recall, cognitive function such as selective attention, cognitive function in older people, verbal and visual memory, learning ability, selective attention and sleep quality over time.
The patented ingredient combines Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) and Boswellia (Boswellia serrata). It is standardized to gallic acid, ellagic acid and amyrins — the key compounds in these botanicals are the key ingredients.
Broad cognitive support
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial carried out by PLT Health Solutions, a group of 100 healthy female and male participants aged 40 to 65 years consumed Nutricog or the placebo every day for 120 days.
The patented ingredient combines Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) and Boswellia (Boswellia serrata).Both groups were assessed on their learning memory, including working memory, attention and decision-making. Their performance was evaluated using the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test and the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery, as well as the Athens Insomnia Scale and biomarker testing for Brain-derived Neurotrophic Factor.
The research determined that the participants who received Nutricog experienced “significant improvements” when compared to the placebo group.
“The power of these clinical results is not just that Nutricog showed significance in such a broad array of areas, but the amount of change versus placebo that was demonstrated,” comments Jeremy Appleton, director of medical and scientific affairs at PLT Health Solutions.
All age groups
According to PLT Health Solutions, people of all age groups can benefit from improved cognitive health and performance.
“The market size and potential for knowledge workers alone — that includes over 100 million people — speaks to a huge number of people who can benefit from this ingredient,” Appleton adds.
The Morristown, New Jersey, US-based R&D company focused on ingredients for health unveiled Nutricog in February of last year, with the company’s CEO highlighting the growing consumer interest in cognitive support products during the product launch.
