Health Canada greenlights Biohm Technologies’ probiotic and fungal blend for gut health
Key takeaways
- Health Canada has approved Biohm Technologies’ Mycohsa, a probiotic blend that combines both beneficial bacterial and fungal strains to support digestive health.
- Mycohsa is the first data-powered probiotic clinically shown to break down digestive biofilms and balance both bacteria and yeasts in the gut.
- This regulatory approval grants an official Natural Product Number, streamlining how Canadian supplement brands can use the ingredient with pre-approved health claims.

Microbiome innovator Biohm Technologies has received a Natural Product Number (NPN) from Health Canada for its flagship clinically supported probiotic blend, Mycohsa. Mycohsa is developed with a “multi-kingdom” approach that combines beneficial bacterial and fungal strains — a departure from the industry’s focus on bacteria alone.
The ingredient was designed to support digestive health and help maintain a healthy gut microbiome balance. It comes in capsules containing one1 billion CFU.
The new distinction allows dietary supplement brands marketing products in Canada to formulate with Mycohsa under an approved framework. The framework includes a range of permitted probiotic structure/function claims related to digestive and gastrointestinal health.
“This approval represents an important milestone for Mycohsa and for our partners in the Canadian market,” says Kristin Wilhoyte, VP of marketing at Biohm Technologies. “Having an approved NPN gives brands additional confidence and flexibility when developing products for Canada.”

Extensive bacterial and fungal research
Operating in Cleveland, Ohio, US, Biohm Technologies develops targeted microbiome products leveraging the company’s extensive dataset of bacterial and fungal populations in the gut.
Biohm’s data-driven methodology, branded Symbiont, is the basis for the creation of ingredients validated through clinical trials.
Mycohsa is the first data-powered probiotic blend clinically shown to break down digestive biofilms and support optimal levels of both bacteria and yeasts for gut health.
Biohm Technologies also offers its comprehensive microbiome gut testing kits as a private label solution for brands in the health and wellness space.
Health Canada updates
Health Canada’s NPN system is widely recognized within the supplement industry as an important regulatory pathway for natural health products sold in Canada. Companies formulating with ingredients that already hold an NPN can often streamline product development and registration efforts for the Canadian market.
In recent updates, India-based nutraceutical specialist Arjuna Natural’s Shoden ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) extract was also approved by Health Canada as a Natural Health Product last March.
The distinction was also applied to TSI Group’s Peak ATP (adenosine 5’-triphosphate), a bioavailable, non-stimulant energy source that is backed by five sports nutrition claims.
