Grøntvedt Biotech flaunts its advanced marine omega-11 and 3 at SupplySide West

04 Oct 2023 --- Containing one of the highest levels of omega-11 available on the market, Ceto3, Grøntvedt Biotech’s branded ingredient positioned to boost consumers’ omega-3 index, will be presented at SupplySide West in Las Vegas, US, at the end of the month. 

“Omega-11 (cetoleic acid) has been shown to convert eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in the body from alpha-linolenic acid (ALA),” Henrik Traaholt, chief commercial officer at Grøntvedt Biotech, tells Nutrition Insight. “The first study was done on human liver cells showing that it stimulated the body’s conversation from ALA to EPA/DHA by 40%.”

The body’s ability to convert ALA into EPA/DHA is a relatively slow process, he shares.

“Ceto3 is changing that by boosting production according to our omega-3 index study,” says Traaholt.

“Ceto3 will increase the efficacy of omega-3 inside the human body. Ceto3 could be an added omega-3 boost to existing supplements or used in combination with pure omega-3 fish oil products.”

The conversion of cetoleic acid 
Ceto3 boosts the body’s production of EPA and DHA by up to 50%, according to an omega-3 index pilot study conducted in the UK on two experimental groups featuring Ceto3 and another fish oil group published in PubMed. 

Participants from each group took two 1,000 mg capsules daily for 12 weeks. Omegaquant Analytics test kits were used and samples were analyzed at their partner lab at the University of Sterling. Omega-11 for omega bioavailability is gaining more attention from researchers, with the Norwegian Seafood Research Fund running seven consecutive studies to document the health benefits of cetoleic acid.Grøntvedt Biotech’s production facility produces its Ceto3 oil in 30 minutes.

“Our Ceto3, omega-11 and omega-3 ingredients, bring something innovative to the omega space. It will be a point of differentiation for innovative nutraceutical brands and increase efficacy for consumers with its internal boost effect of omega-3,” notes Traaholt. 

Grøntvedt Biotech, based in Ørlandet, Norway, produces its oil from fresh fish within 30 minutes, enhancing the sensory qualities for capsules and liquid formulation. High omega-11 is only found in North Atlantic pelagic fish. 

“This is the first study done on Ceto3’s effect. The increase in omega-3 index indicates the unique effect of omega-11. Furthermore, the immediate processing, which we do with Ceto3, gives added consumer value with no unpleasant fishy reflux,” says Stig Jansson, chief innovation officer at Grøntvedt Biotech. 

Expanding the market for omegas
Ceto3 is being launched in several markets in different delivery forms. The product can be used as a smoothie or other drinks in trending liquid format. “You then open the market for consumer groups like children or the elderly who do not like to take a capsule as delivery form,” concludes Traaholt.

Grøntvedt Biotech launched Ceto3 earlier this year. The omega-11 and omega-3 sourced from North Atlantic pelagic fish is finding applications in the heart and skin health arenas. Last year, the company introduced its cetoleic acid and omega-3 oil.
