Ganeden’s Health Canada approvals assist company’s expansion in Canada
17 Aug 2017 --- Ganeden has made advancements for the usage of its probiotic strain GanedenBC30 in Canada. The probiotic ingredient company has received a no objection letter from national public health department Health Canada, which provides further support for approved probiotic wording and allows Canadian companies fortifying with GanedenBC30 to make additional health claims.
The no objection letter from Health Canada confirms that products fortified with GanedenBC30 can make any of the general health claims that are allowed in the country’s probiotic monograph, and also provides opportunities for new gut flora language on packaging. Ganeden believes this new approval will make it easier for companies to educate consumers on the benefits of GanedenBC30 on their food and beverage product packaging.
“Canada has become a strong market for probiotic fortification in foods and beverages, and we are dedicated to advancing regulatory approvals and probiotic language both there and internationally,” says Dr. David Keller, Vice President of Scientific Operations for Ganeden. “Our goal as a leader in the space is to make it as easy as possible for food and beverage manufacturers to fortify with a high-quality probiotic ingredient, and to also provide direction on probiotic-related health claims and educational content.”
Ganeden President and CEO Michael Bush has also commented on further worldwide expansion plans in a recent interview in The World of Food Ingredients: “The US market is our strongest at this point, but the Asian market has also been growing very quickly; Japan, China and India are all looking positive for us with many opportunities; so we are looking forward to continually expanding that business.”
Probiotics are in high demand worldwide, and Canada is no exception, according to Ganeden. The company notes that it is already a well-known name in the Canadian probiotic industry and that it has partnered with many food and beverage manufacturers to fortify GanedenBC30 into a variety of everyday products.
Big plans
GanedenBC30 is described by the company as: “a spore-former which makes it highly stable and allows it to remain viable through most manufacturing processes, three years of shelf life and the low pH of stomach acid.” Ganeden reports that its efficacy is backed by over 27 published studies showing safety, digestive support, immune support and protein utilization benefits.
“The science-backed probiotic strain GanedenBC30 is best known for its efficacy and stability, which allows it to survive most manufacturing processes, shelf-life and gastric transit – opening up endless opportunities for fortification in foods and beverages where other probiotic strains are often unable to survive,” the company claims.
Ganeden also has plans for its inactivated version of GanedenBC30, which it calls Staimune. NutritionInsight recently spoke to Keller about Staimune, which he says can be used with products like shelf-stable beverages that cannot be combined with a probiotic. Ganeden anticipates Staimune to be an industry-changing ingredient.
“We already have a good deal of interest from CPG companies, so you will start to see products fortified with Staimune in the next quarter,” comments Bush.
Ganeden has stated that it plans to continue its expansion and partnerships in the Canadian market, with multiple new probiotic products currently in development, many of which are expected to launch this year.
