Formulation potential in PLT Health Solutions’ weight loss supplement revealed
04 Mar 2022 --- PLT Health Solutions’ Slendacor weight management complex can aid in weight loss without acting as a stimulant, a company-led study has revealed.
The human trial found participants taking one dose of Slendacor per day showed up to a 15.2% increase in resting energy expenditure after one week. Participants showed no sign of increased heart rate or blood pressure, indicating the ingredient does not function as a stimulant.
Steve Fink, vice president of marketing for PLT Health Solutions tells NutritionInsight: “High quality clinical science on supplement ingredients builds trust with consumers. The new studies we’re announcing today are part of a continuing effort by PLT and our innovation partner Laila to build our portfolio of science around Slendacor.”
Results from the studies point to Slendacor’s potential use in multipurpose product formulations. Currently, the water-soluble version of the complex is used in a range of products, such as gummies, shakes, shots and powders, Fink says.
The weight management complex is a combination of extracts from turmeric, moringa and curry leaf. Examining Slendacor’s effects
In 2018, a Slendacor study found the formula resulted in an average weight loss of 12 lbs and two inches off the waist after 16 weeks. The most recent studies showcase the mechanisms of action for weight loss, which are a result of Slendacor’s thermogenic effects on human subjects.
The data on Slendacor’s effect on lipolysis means the complex increases the metabolism of fat cells, burning the fat rather than sending it to energy reserves.
“In 2021, Health Canada approved a series of new claims for Slendacor Weight Management Complex based on our previous clinical studies,” says Fink.
These potential benefits include: lowering blood triglycerides, total and LDL cholesterol, supporting cardiovascular health by reducing total and LDL cholesterol and reducing blood triglycerides, total and LDL cholesterol levels.
With increased consumer scrutiny and tightening legal regulations, scientific backing is more important than ever.
Shifting space for weight loss supplements
Industry as well as consumer perception surrounding weight loss supplements or “diet pills” has shifted greatly over the past two decades, details Fink, who notes the COVID-19 pandemic has also created a marked shift within the health space.
“These include the nutrition or recommender community, the regulatory community, leading consumer product formulators and even the consumer.”
Fink adds that the rising global population of overweight and obese people is a major driver of the growing weight loss industry, whose marketing tactics have also shifted with the times.
“One trend that we see with leading weight management companies is a focus on the ‘whole person’ and not just the ‘dieter’ in developing weight management products and weight management regimens,” Fink notes.
Changing methods of delivery
In addition to perceptions regarding weight loss, delivery mechanisms for weight loss aids are also transforming.
“Another major trend has been the proliferation of delivery systems for weight management ingredients and products. We’re seeing a lot more shakes, beverages, foods, gummies and dissolvable powders,” he elaborates, adding that market diversity has changed the way products are created.
“One final change is the entrance of the weight management benefit into other market categories, for example, active/sports nutrition. We are seeing sports nutrition companies add weight management components to existing formulations and expand their product lines to include weight management entries.”
Last year, Fink, alongside other industry members, highlighted emerging trends within the weight management industry such as the rise of vegan diets and the expansion of options within the vegan F&B industry.
