Kemin releases polyphenol supplement for sleep-deprived consumers
20 Jan 2021 --- US-based ingredient manufacturer Kemin Industries is releasing a sleep aid ingredient formulated with a unique blend of polyphenols.
Branded DailyZz, the ingredient has proven efficacious in clinical trials and is being marketed as addressing modern lifestyles that produce ever-prevalent sleep disorders.
Kim Edwards, global product manager, Kemin Human Nutrition and Health, explains that the company responds to a growing market of people struggling to get the consistency and level of rest needed.
“Consumers are sleeping less hours due to increased stress at work, obligations at home and the growing use of digital devices.”
“People are looking for natural, non-addictive sleep ingredients to improve their quality of sleep and feel rested to take on the next day. DailyZz meets all these needs,” she asserts.
According to a report from the National Sleep Foundation in the US, 87 percent of US adults experience regular sleeping problems.
“Sleep is an important part of overall health, and many people without sleep disorders are looking for ways to improve their sleep so that they can feel more rested during the day and perform better,” says Michael Grandner, director of the Sleep and Health Research Program at the University of Arizona College of Medicine.
Grandner led a recent clinical trial into DailyZz. The results showed that DailyZz could promote better quality sleep and improve next-day functioning in healthy adults with occasional sleep complaints.
The study recruited 100 participants and used “multiple rigorous testing methods,” including computerized performance testing and validated sleep diary surveys.
Grandner describes these surveys as “the gold standard” for assessing the subjective sleep experience.
During the 30-day study, participants received either 485 mg of DailyZz to take 30 minutes before bed or a placebo.
Those taking DailyZz each night showed significant improvement in their quality of sleep and better concentration, reaction time and visual recall and processing. The participants taking the ingredient also showed improved judgment in a risk-taking scenario after a night of quality sleep.
“Our study showed that DailyZz might help some of the people struggling with sleep to meet their goals of better sleep and better daytime functioning.”
Sleep supplements on the rise
Kemin’s latest supplement joins many options entering the market for consumers trying to improve their sleep quality and patterns.
Last year, sleep wellness brand Proper released a range of personalized sleep aid supplements with a “clinical feel,” to appeal to the growing telehealth market, which has been driven up by the COVID-19 virus.
Innova Market Insights marked “Mood: The Next Occasion” as one of its top trends for 2021.
Brain and mood health supplements are on the rise, with botanical/herbal mood supplements having risen 40 percent (CAGR) between 2015 and 2019.
