Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN’s (FAO) latest report emphasizes the need to align trade policies with nutrition goals to enhance global diet quality while mitigating trade-driven dietary shifts that contribute to obesity and malnutrition. The report “Trade and Nutrition: Policy Coherence for Healthy Diets” finds robust global trade growth of food and agricultural products, which has benefitted food and nutrient diversity, availability and affordability.

At Food Ingredients Europe (FiE) 2024, Sensus, a division of Royal Cosun, presented chicory root fiber prebiotic. Eszter Heijnen-Nagy, the company’s commercial manager, highlighted how the source of natural and soluble dietary fiber supports food manufacturers seeking clean label ingredients to boost healthfulness. Marcel van der Vaart, business development manager of Plant Proteins at Cosun Protein, dived into the company’s first commercial plant-based protein product, Tendra, which is touted to enhance the taste and functional properties of F&B products.

Oobli has secured US FDA Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status for its sweet protein Monellin, expanding its platform of sugar alternatives for F&B applications. “Oobli is changing the future of sweetness through the use of sweet proteins as a replacement for traditional cane sugar and other alternative sweeteners like aspartame, sucralose, stevia and erythritol,” says Jason Ryder, Oobli founder and CTO, and adjunct professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of California Berkeley.
N-utra functional vitamin D3-enriched mealworm flour obtains EU Novel Food status

Nutriearth has launched its vitamin D-rich mealworm-based (Tenebrio molitor) functional flour N-utra in Europe, having obtained EU novel food status. Backed by 50 worldwide patents, the ingredient offers a natural and sustainable vitamin D3, produced without extraction, purification or chemicals. The company was greenlighted by the European Food Safety Authority last year. It obtains its yellow mealworm powder for the flour by drying and grinding whole larvae of the yellow mealworm. The powder is then treated with UV light to reduce microbial contamination.

Meals on Wheels America’s new findings from a pilot study quantitatively measure how regular social interaction alleviates feelings of disconnectedness in older adults. The analysis found 53% of participants who received friendly calls and/or visits reported “statistically significant” reductions in social disconnectedness. Social isolation and loneliness are growing public health concerns and was declared a national epidemic in 2023 by the US Surgeon General. The negative consequences of social isolation include anxiety, depression, cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, lower quality of life and increased use of health care services.
