The potential for digestive health plant extracts

08 Sep 2017 | Indena

Digestive and gastrointestinal disorders have become more widespread in the world today, as a result of increasingly unhealthy dietary habits, stressful lifestyles, growing elderly populations and greater awareness of stomach and gastrointestinal conditions. Indena’s latest innovation for natural digestive relief is Prodigest, a patented combination of two standardized ingredients: a unique extract of artichoke leaves (Cynara cardunculus L.) and a similarly unique lipophilic CO2 extract of ginger roots (Zingiber officinale Rosc.).

This is Rob Moyers at Vita Foods Asia in Singapore, and I'm here with Cosimo Palumbo from Indena.

Cosimo, there's a big trend towards digestive health products.

Where are some of the opportunities here and what's driving this trend?

Yes, absolutely.

This is a big trend for Indina as , and in fact we are addressing these health conditions with several R&D activities and to us for sure from the botanical kingdom.

There are a number of opportunities to explore and we happened to develop two products that fall within this particular category of products, and we know that there are issues at the digestive level as as there are some other issues affecting the small intestine.

And for these reasons we have been working to find solutions from the botanical kingdom.

To address these two basic conditions, what have you found?

We found that nature gave us a couple of good ingredients, one being artichoke and one being ginger.

Then when combined together and when perfectly standardized and checked for quality, are very efficacious to improve dyspeptic symptoms, and dyspepsia is a broad definition.

And can be defined with 7 symptoms like epigastric pain or bloating, nausea, and these two ingredients, when combined together in a formulation that can be administered at just 120 mg with the biggest meals, improve gastric emptying and you know that the lower food stays in the intestine.

Better are the symptoms.

So it's a very small dose.

It is efficacious.

There are two major clinical studies to support these claims, and it's brand new.

It's patented for its combination and use, and so that that provides a good solution, particularly in combination with digestive enzymes or to cover.

Consumers in between two different administrations of digestive enzymes because you can get benefits in 1 hour because we have measured the gastric emptying in a placebo controlled randomized studies in 1 hour to check the mechanism of action and again it's brand new and we believe that.

That addresses one of these conditions.

On the other hand, when it comes to the small intestine and the probiotics, we don't do probiotics.

We know it's a big trend, but we know that inflammation is also one of the conditions that are important to address when it comes to digestive health and in general, gastrointestinal health, and we found that our Boswellia phytosome, and phytosome is a proprietary technology of Inna that announces bioavailability of botanical extracts.

It was found to be efficacious in reducing an objective parameter connected to inflammation in the gut called calprotectin.

Calprotectin again it's an inflammatory marker of the intestine that can be reduced up to 76% when taking our sue phytosome, and we particularly check this in.

Subject in the remission phase of the UC, so it's colitis, and we know it's been very efficacious.

It's not new in the sense that we know from randomized controlled trials and from a very good systematic review that was issued a few years ago that intestinal health can be addressed with Bosweala.

The point is that in Dena with this particular Phytosone formulation was able to reduce the dose of the extract of Boswea needed to obtain good results in terms of gastrointestinal health, making the administration of Bosweia much more suitable for customer compliance.

These two products.

Are mainly aimed at the supplement space.

Do they also have any opportunities within food and beverages?

For sure they were designed to address this need in the dietary supplement space, but for sure both can be used also in some food matrixes with no problem as as they can be combined in the different types of delivery system that can fit different types of.

Let's say businesses.

Cosimo, thank you very much.

Thank you.
