In brief: Research and study
The WHO published a new report on targets to eliminate global trans fat by 2023. It details that although 58 countries have introduced laws that will protect 3.2 billion people from the harmful substance by the end of 2021, more than 100 countries still need to take action to remove these harmful substances from their food supplies. Notably, when governments do act, they overwhelmingly adopt best-practice policies rather than less restrictive ones. Despite the “encouraging progress,” significant disparities persist in policy coverage by region and country income level. No low-income or lower-middle-income countries have yet adopted any best-practice policies.
Probiotics may help children and adolescents with obesity lose weight when taken alongside a calorie-controlled diet, according to a study being presented at e-ECE 2020. The study found that 100 obese children aged six to 18 who were put on a calorie-restricted diet and given probiotics Bifidobacterium breve BR03 and Bifidobacterium breve B632 for eight weeks lost more weight. They had also improved insulin sensitivity compared with children on a diet only. These findings suggest that probiotic supplements and a calorie-controlled diet may also reduce future health risks, such as heart disease and diabetes. The researchers’ next step is to identify patients that could benefit from this probiotic treatment to create a more personalized weight-loss strategy.
