Weekly Roundup: FDA launches nutrition education campaign, Bio-Kult adds antibiotics to digestion and immunity portfolio
13 Mar 2020 --- This week in nutrition news, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) introduced a new educational campaign to increase public awareness for the importance of balanced, nutritious diets across all ages. Meanwhile, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) congregated virtually instead of in person for a Dietary Guidelines meeting due to current coronavirus health concerns. Bio-Kult added two new antibiotics to its digestive and immune health product portfolio and Enhanced Recovery launched an omega 3 sports drink together alongside a new Science & Nutrition Advisory Board.
In brief: Launches and releases
The FDA launched an educational campaign called “New Nutrition Facts label What’s In It For You?” designed to to increase awareness of the new Nutrition Facts label for packaged foods. The FDA is promoting its education campaign by means of videos of food products receiving a make-over, posting new looks via social media and as part of a fashion show, modeling the new Nutrition Facts labels on the runway. This new content is expected to be used by consumers, healthcare professionals, registered dietitians, teachers and community leaders to assist consumers in making informed dietary choices for themselves and their families. The FDA is collaborating with other federal agencies, public health and consumer groups, professional associations, and industry groups to increase public awareness.
Two new antibiotic products joined Bio-Kult’s line of formulations targeting digestive and immune health. The new Bio-Kult Boosted contains the same 14 strains as Bio-Kult Advanced, but with a fourfold concentration of bacteria, as well as vitamin B12, which contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system. Meanwhile, Bio-Kult S. Boulardii contains the live yeast Saccharomyces boulardii CNCM I-3799, as well as Preplex and vitamin D3. This bacterial species is frequently recommended by nutritional experts as an ideal travel support and vitamin D3 contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system.
Enhanced Recovery launched its Omega-3 Sports Drink together with its new Science & Nutrition Advisory Board this week. Chaired by internationally renowned sports and fitness industry expert Dr. Bob Murray, the board will explore developing health and fitness applications of the recently launched muscle recovery product. The company’s newest sports beverage supports rapid muscle recovery, repair and adaptation following intense workouts or competition. It features omega 3 fatty acids, high-quality protein, nutrient-absorption-stimulating carbohydrates, vitamins D and E, as well as natural antioxidants in a fruit juice beverage.
Grillo’s Pickles’ fans inspired the launch of its cold-pressed vinegar juice targeting the sports nutrition sector. The company touts the juices as being able to help reduce muscle cramps and help the body recover to normal electrolyte levels more quickly after a hard workout. They also boost gut health and can help regulate blood sugar levels, Grillo’s affirms. The beverage launch arrives in two flavors, lemon and pickle, with a maximum of 5 g of sugar.
In brief: COVID-19 accommodations
The USDA, in coordination with the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), scheduled today’s fifth meeting of the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee to an online-only format out of caution in response to travel restrictions imposed by some of the members’ employers. The meeting was originally intended to be held in the country’s capital later this week. The timing and content of the meeting did not alter and the public is still able to view the discussions online.
In brief: Research and study
Marinova is highlighting the results of an Australian clinical study, which has revealed that an extract from the seaweed Undaria pinnatifida influences over 30 different biological pathways and processes. The study demonstrated that the unique polysaccharide fucoidan, derived from brown macroalgae, affects microRNA composition in the plasma of healthy individuals and thus confirms previous data demonstrating that fucoidan has beneficial effects on immunity, cancer cells, inflammation and neurological function. Results of the study also demonstrated that fucoidan can alter regulatory microRNA in healthy individuals. Furthermore, they showed that even a single dose of fucoidan has the potential to affect the expression of genes related to fundamental cellular processes. This research provides insight into new pathways not formerly associated with fucoidan, the study affirms.
In brief: Certifications and appointments
Specialty proteins and starches provider MGP Ingredients received low fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAP) certification for its dietary fibers Fibersym RW and FiberRite RW by Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. The low FODMAP icon will now provide food formulators added confidence that MGP’s dietary fibers will not promote abdominal discomfort and gas during digestion. Furthermore, it helps consumers and food manufacturers alike identify products and ingredients that support digestive health.
