TSI’s vegetarian GlucosaGreen has gut health and anti-aging benefits, study finds
12 Oct 2021 --- US-based TSI Group’s GlucosaGreen product may benefit both gut and muscle health, according to a human clinical trial which points to potential healthy aging properties.
Glucosa Green is a vegetarian glucosamine supplement, branded as a non-shellfish derived joint health product.
“We are researching other ways that glucosamine can benefit people and the planet. Through our efforts, we are getting a better picture of what glucosamine, and specifically GlucosaGreen, can do,” Will Ji, president of TSI Group bio-active ingredients division, says.Glucosamine could pave the way for further research in the anti-aging area.
Bolstering gut health
The placebo-controlled study sought to investigate the potential benefits of glucosamine supplements to gut health. It was published in the Journal of Nutrients.
Participants consumed 3000 mg of GlucosaGreen daily, each spanning three weeks, with a two-week washout period.
The findings show the supplement provided functional gut health benefits, reduced bloating, constipation and hard stools while inducing changes in the microbiota and metabolome.
Additionally, GlucosaGreen appeared to increase fecal nitrogen retention, particularly amino acids linked to muscle health such as total branched-chain amino acids and individual amino acids – leucine, isoleucine and valine.
Glucosamine as an anti-aging ingredient
The findings related to muscle health could pave the way forward in using glucosamine as an anti-aging ingredient.
“Glucosamine could be the optimal anti-aging ingredient, as it works on joints and potentially on muscle health. These, along with brain health, are usually the key targets for healthy aging,” Peter Mazzilli, TSI group director of marketing and business development, notes.
Future research could consequently focus on the use of the glucosamine in muscle health, such as age-related muscle loss known as sarcopenia, or other incidences in which muscle protein breakdown is increased such as calorie restricted diets, hospitalization, immobilization, study co-investigator Ralf Jager says.
An epidemiological study last year showed consumption of glucosamine could decrease the risk of mortality by an even greater degree than regular exercise.
