Tropical freshwater fish collagen holds strong wrinkle reducing capabilities, Vietnamese study finds
18 Dec 2018 --- Vinh Hoan, supplier of pangasius and marine collagen peptides, has documented substantial improvements in skin health and appearance in study participants treated with 10g a day of Vinh Wellness Collagen. The Vietnamese company supplies the “next generation” of freshwater collagen, sourced from tropical, food-grade freshwater fish. As consumers increasingly seek skin health products that work “from within,” those concerned with the aging process’ impact on skin, such as wrinkles, may be drawn to collagen supplementation.
Due to its low molecular weight, collagen peptides derived from fish offer superior absorption and bioavailability compared with porcine and bovine collagen, according to the company. Fish derived collagen can also be used widely across cultures that do not wish to consume beef or pork products.
Specific to freshwater fish collagen from pangasius, the company says that it has a lower sodium level which means the scent is more subtle and the efficacy of the ingredient is enhanced as it has a “unique amino acid profile” compared to other marine sources.
Significant improvements were reported in the study that compared the results from 50 healthy females aged 45 to 60 years old when treated with collagen or a placebo for 12 weeks. The skin quality improvements were reported on wrinkles, elasticity, hydration, firmness and radiance, according to the study. In all assessments, participants treated with Vinh Wellness Collagen consistently reported higher improvements compared to those with placebo, ranging from 14 to 25 percent.
Wrinkles: Within the Vinh Wellness Collagen group, participants had a reduction of between 17 percent and 35 percent for wrinkle scores.
Elasticity: Cheek skin elasticity was improved by 20 percent within the first 6 weeks of supplementation.
Hydration: According to participant evaluations from the study, skin hydration was 14 percent higher in the collagen group compared to the placebo group after 12 weeks of use. The company notes that Vinh Wellness Collagen can be combined with other ingredients such as hyaluronic acid for a faster result.
Collagen use in the health industry has been proliferating. Collagen is already widespread in the beauty industry for its skin benefits and is already known to support joint and bone health. Its use is expected to become an even more significant trend in 2019. Consumers are now becoming more aware of its potential for sports nutrition, healthy aging, bone and joint health.
With a varied amino acid profile, collagen peptides contain high levels of the amino acids glycine, hydroxyproline, proline, alanine and arginine – providing specific nutritional benefits not found in other protein sources.
