Nourishing the Inner You with Resistant Starch

Healthy digestion is a cornerstone of good health and Australians are demanding more foods high in fibre to achieve this. However, the foods being eaten are not providing consumers with the different types of fibre they need... like resistant starch.

According to Robert Burbury, Chief Executive Officer at BARLEYmax—the healthy grain, “Consumers are becoming increasingly health conscious which is placing pressure on manufacturers to keep up with changing consumer preferences.

Developed by the BARLEYmax Enterprises partnership between CSIRO and Australian Capital Ventures Limited, BARLEYmax™ has set out to ease the burden of chronic health issues by capitalising on the possibilities of enhancing the nutritional value of wholegrains, like barley.
 
Burbury adds, “As a wholegrain BARLEYmax can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease and contribute to the control of obesity. BARLEYmax foods have low glycaemic index which is of benefit in the management of diabetes.” 
 
According to David Topping, Chief Research Scientist at CSIRO, BARLEYmax is a source rich in resistant starch which is an important fermentative for a healthy gut.
 
“Resistant starch escapes digestion and is fermented extensively in the large bowel, which promotes improved gut health and possibly lowers the risk of health problems that have resulted from our affluent lifestyles,” Topping says.
 
Australian dietitian, Jane Barnes, adds, “Including more resistant starch in your diet makes sense in helping to prevent the health problems of our population. We need an effectively working gut to receive all of the nutrition from the food we eat.”
