Nestlé Health Science acquires personalized ketogenic app PronoKal
07 Feb 2022 --- Nestlé Health Science (NHSc) is growing its weight management portfolio with the purchase of PronoKal from Abac Capital. PronoKal is an “applied genomics” weight loss app with a strong base in southern Europe. The system, supported by doctors, offers consumers a personalized ketogenic diet and fitness plan, helping them lose up to 9 kg per month.
The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2022. Financial details have not yet been disclosed.
“The acquisition of PronoKal adds a new dimension to our weight management portfolio and will enable us to help more people lead healthier lives,” asserts the CEO of NHSc, Greg Behar.
“Science-based weight loss” through applied genomics
The PronoKal app uses applied genomics to tailor each plan to the individual user, offering a weight-loss tool that caters to each user’s needs and physical limitations. Applied genomics refers to the use of genetic information to generate specific health approaches.
While genomics is usually restricted to the study and treatment of diseases and chronic conditions, apps like PronoKal indicate the field is primed to take over the world of weight loss and weight management systems.
After signing up for PronoKal, users receive a detailed plan for achieving their weight loss goals, including instructions to keep a “very-low-calorie ketogenic diet,” tips for daily fitness and personalized help from nutritionists and life coaches. Innova Market Insights has noted that personalized ketogenic diet plans have been on the rise over the past few years.
“With medical supervision, healthy ketogenic meals and support through the app, PronoKal is designed to take the confusion and stress out of weight loss, supporting people through their weight management journey,” says Behar.
Last year, the UK House of Commons Science and Technology Committee called for tighter restrictions for DTC genomic testing, with experts noting the “huge potential” of the field within the world of nutrition.
Earlier this year, Eagle Genomics and Quadram launched an “AI-powered microbiome investigation” to help develop more personalized nutrition for those suffering from chronic disease.
Rise of the ketogenic diet
According to Innova Market Insights, the period of 2016-2020 saw a 165% rise in products making keto-friendly claims. Based on Innova’s data, the keto diet is now on par with traditional weight loss formats, and products making keto claims are poised to overtake conventional dietary aids.
The acquisition of PronoKal is not Nestlé’s first foray into the world of ketogenic diets. In November, NHSc spotlighted ketogenic supplements as a “natural alternative” solution for migraines after a virtual study.
Last July, health food brand That’s it. entered the keto sphere with its “on-the-go” energy bar Keto Kick, which promises consumers a clean, healthy and keto-friendly snack to help maintain their weight goals.
