Nektium obtains CITES approval for endangered adaptogen Rhodiola rosea
23 Jun 2023 --- Nektium has obtained trade permits for its Rhodiola rosea extracts from Spanish authorities, who have certified its entire stock as being compliant with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The plant is an adaptogen linked to various cognitive health and sports performance benefits.
All Rhodiola species were added to Appendix II of the CITES convention in February 2023 to ensure sustainable harvesting and trade.
Nektium has worked with Rhodiola rosea for over two decades, which is the starting material for its botanical extract Rhodiolife.
“When CITES raised concerns about the potential scarcity of Rhodiola rosea last year, we had already taken measures to ensure a long-term supply through sustainable sourcing practices,” Miguel Jimenez, CEO of Nektium, tells Nutrition Insight.
“The current trade permits approved by CITES management authorities correspond to the large volumes of Rhodiola we have secured in stock. We are confident that this supply will sufficiently meet the demand for Rhodiolife for a significant time.”
He adds that the certification is a first step in demonstrating Nektium’s compliance with regulations, which would also make future stock certifications a standard procedure.
CITES requirements
The new regulations that CITES ratified were incorporated into different regulatory frameworks across the globe, explains Jimenez. Within the EU, the regulation was updated in May.
“The national CITES management authorities request full transparency regarding the source of any material obtained before or after February 2023, when the CITES regulation was approved.”
“The permits refer to the starting material for our Rhodiolife ingredient that we have obtained from our supplier in the Altai mountains. With full control over the supply chain and all required documentation and evidence at hand, the trade permits were obtained in a timely fashion.”
Nektium also sources Rhodiola rosea from the company’s large-scale cultivation program for a more predictable and secure long-term supply of raw materials.
Opportunity for more sustainable supply chain
Jimenez explains that adding Rhodiola spp. to CITES Appendix II highlights the importance of sustainable sourcing and ethical production practices in the natural products industry.
“While compliance with CITES may present challenges for some companies in the short term, it is likely to create a more sustainable and responsible supply chain in the long term.”
“This situation also presents an opportunity for companies that have prioritized sustainable sourcing and ethical production practices from the outset. These companies will have an advantage in the market, as they can demonstrate compliance with CITES requirements and differentiate themselves from competitors.”
At the same time, he foresees the possibility that the number of Rhodiola extract producers in the market will decrease until all the supply conditions are met, according to CITES.
“Compliance with CITES will require additional efforts, documentation and time, which may be challenging for some companies.”
Collaborating for long-term supply
Nektium uses sustainable and ethical production practices for its ingredient sources, notes Jimenez.
“We believe that this approach is critical for the long-term viability of the natural products industry. We will continue to work closely with our suppliers and regulatory authorities to ensure that our sourcing practices comply with all relevant regulations and standards.”
He highlights that effective communication and diligent processes are crucial to ensuring a long-term supply of Rhodiola.
“Our colleagues in the supply chain and sustainability departments work closely with our suppliers and CITES management authorities to ensure that all requirements are met and that our sourcing practices are compliant.”
Moreover, this collaborative approach ensures Nektium’s practices are transparent and responsible and has assured that the company could secure significant stock and obtain necessary trade permits from CITES, adds Jimenez.
“The focus on sourcing is essential for the long-term viability of Rhodiolife,” he continues. “We will continue prioritizing sustainability and compliance in all aspects of our business, from sourcing to extract production.”
Adaptogen demand
Awareness of Rhodiola rosea has been increasing in recent years as adaptogens are increasingly recognized for their broad health application possibilities and take a more significant role in nutraceuticals.
“While it is difficult to predict the future developments of the adaptogen category, it is clear that there is a growing interest in these natural ingredients and their potential health benefits,” adds Jimenez.
“Experts predict that adaptogens will continue to gain popularity and become more mainstream in the health and wellness industry. Overall, the future of adaptogens is likely to be shaped by ongoing research, changing consumer preferences, and a growing focus on sustainability and ethical sourcing.”
