29/11/07 Martek Biosciences has announced that life'sDHA, its patented, vegetarian form of DHA omega-3 fatty acid, essential for brain, eye and heart health, is now available in three new products from Dalco Foods' Wellness Line. The products include hamburgers, schnitzel, and cordon bleu, and will all contain 40 mg or more per serving of Martek's life'sDHA. Based in The Netherlands, Dalco Foods provides food products for retailers, wholesalers and restaurant chains throughout Europe.
According to the European Union Lipgene Project, current European intakes of omega-3 fatty acids are low and meeting dietary needs for omega-3s is "not compatible with ensuring sustainability of fish supplies." In addition, Lipgene states that oily fish, the main dietary source of omega-3s, accumulate many contaminants in the marine environment. In a recent study of dietary patterns from Lipgene, average intakes of omega-3 fatty acids in the UK were found to be around 244mg per day, far below the UK recommended 450mg per day.
"As a sustainable, contaminant-free and non-fish source of omega-3 fatty acids, life'sDHA is a great fit for Dalco's new line of health conscious Wellness foods, and for consumers who want to increase their omega-3 consumption," says Joe Buron, vice president of marketing and sales, Martek. "We're pleased to be working with Dalco Foods to make the health benefits of DHA omega-3 available in convenient products for consumers worldwide."
DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) omega-3 is a long-chain omega-3 fatty acid that serves as a primary building block for the brain and the eyes and supports brain, eye and cardiovascular health throughout life. There is a large and growing body of scientific evidence demonstrating that people of all ages, from infants to aging adults, benefit from an adequate supply of DHA omega-3 in their diets. Scientific reviews have noted the importance of DHA omega-3 in proper brain and eye function, and there are studies currently underway to investigate its role in decreasing the prevalence of certain neurological disorders.
