MacuHealth scores eye supplement certification as 61% of brands fall short of label claims
22 Jun 2021 --- MacuHealth has landed supplement certification for its triple carotenoid formula after a test revealed 61 percent of vision supplements do not meet label claims.
An analysis conducted by the Waterford Institute of Technology in Ireland found that out of 46 vision supplement items available in Europe, Mexico and the US, 61 percent did not contain the amount of carotenoids, the active ingredient, listed on the labels.
Additionally, the research found that they did not satisfy label claims of being reliable, accessible and certified.
Verified vision supplements
“Following the recent report exposing that most supplements for vision do not achieve their label claim, MacuHealth is extremely proud to announce that its entire product line is supplement-certified,” notes Frederic Jouhet, founder and president of MacuHealth.
MacuHealth vision supplement contains all three macular carotenoids: lutein, meso-zeaxanthin and zeaxanthin.
MacuHealth is a clinically validated supplement that helps to rebuild and maximize macular pigment over time, resulting in improved visual performance and helping to treat and prevent age-related macular degeneration.
“We are committed to science, excellence, and providing the utmost quality to our customers. Therefore, we have always demanded that further analysis be conducted in addition to those provided by raw material producers and production points for our products,” he adds.
The supplement certification is a thorough, science-based evaluation of products conducted by the Nutrition Research Centre Ireland (NRCI) to confirm that the active components listed on the label claim are present and stable throughout its shelf life.
Eye health claims on the rise
The study results come as F&B and supplement launches featuring an eye health claim are on the rise, with a 20 percent average annual growth seen between 2017 and 2019.
Innova Market Insights data reveals that supplements are the top market category that features an eye health claim, with 44 percent of product launches tracked in 2019.
Increased eye health concerns due to pandemic
Recently, PharmaLinea launched a range of eye health products. The company notes that the pandemic has led to an increase in eye health problems globally due to increased digital device use.
Additionally, with its clinically tested red perilla leaf extract, Cosmax Bio, a supplement maker located in South Korea, is tapping into the growing market for digital device-induced eye fatigue in both young and older people.
“I strongly encourage all companies in the eye care supplement space to follow our lead and get their products supplement certified – for the health and benefit of our patients and eye care professionals,” Jouhet states.
