Krispy Kreme Unveils ‘Calorie Laden’ Shake Range in the UK
16 Sep 2014 --- Food chain Krispy Kreme hit the headlines today when it revealed its latest addition to the menu – a milkshake which is reported to contain as many calories as a Sunday Roast.
The Strawberry and Cream flavored shake contains 612 calories, which is more than a quarter of a woman’s daily allowance. The popular doughnut retailer also has a Chocolate Dream variant (555 calories), Caramel Crunch (508 calories) and Coffee Kreme (446).
In contrast a McDonald’s medium strawberry milkshake has 380.
Nutritionists have already expressed concern over the Krispy Kreme sugary drinks, in part because they argue that calories consumed in liquid form do not register among the satiety hormones in the brain to indicate how full you are.
“At least when you eat a burger there is protein and other beneficial things. Whereas in a calorie explosion like this there are few nutritional benefits,” said Emma Conroy, owner of Edinburgh Nutrition.
Meanwhile in a statement, Krispy Kreme said: “Krispy Kreme offers a range of drink options from indulgent treat milkshakes, to a selection of coffees and soft drinks. Milkshakes range in calories from 446 to 612 calories, making them occasional indulgent treats rather than an everyday drink.”
