Gadot adds magnesium bisglycinate to ingredient portfolio for dietary supplements
26 Oct 2022 --- Israel-based Gadot is introducing pure magnesium bisglycinate to expand its portfolio of mineral ingredients for dietary supplements. The ingredient is pegged as gentle on the stomach, suitable for formulation versatility and has a lower metallic taste – compared to other magnesium ingredients on the market.
The company adds that magnesium bisglycinate is designed to benefit customers looking for extra nutritional support for their mental health and overall well-being, regardless of age.
“Magnesium bisglycinate has two main benefits for consumers. Firstly, it is best absorption or bioavailability to the consumer because it is reacted with amino acids, which the body recognizes as the right vehicle to enter the cell membranes,” Youval Saly, VP of sales and marketing at Gadot, tells NutritionInsight.
“Secondly, laxative effect is one of the main side effects when taking magnesium in high dosage or inorganic forms, such as oxide, carbonate, sulfate or phosphate. Consumers will benefit from taking the correct dosage of magnesium with good digestion and no laxative effect.”
Bioavailability and ingredient traceability
The company has added pure magnesium bisglycinate, which has a greater bioavailability than magnesium carbonate and sulfate, to its extensive range of mineral ingredients for dietary supplements.
To improve transport in cells, the company suggests that formulators combine magnesium bisglycinate with vitamin B6 or taurine to increase absorption.
Furthermore, Gadot’s magnesium bisglycinate is sourced from the Dead Sea. It is Halal- and Kosher-certified, vegan and non-GMO project verified.
Regarding ingredient traceability, Saly explains that “it is supported by our laboratory with strict control, ensuring we get from the raw material to the final destination. Gadot keeps traceability by production date and by the hour it was produced.”
Comparable to other magnesium ingredients?
Gadot illustrates that not all commercially available chelated mineral powders are fully reacted.
Many chelated mineral powders contain magnesium oxide or other inorganic magnesium sources as complexes or buffered blends, which increase the mineral content and allow manufacturers to claim higher mineral content levels.
Magnesium bisglycinate has higher bioavailability than magnesium carbonate and sulfate, as “mineral salts are divided into organic and inorganic salts. Organic salts are more bioavailable than inorganic ones. Magnesium bisglycinate is an organic form that has around 10% of pure magnesium and has an ideal taste profile. There are many studies available that we may supply if needed,” says Saly.
Magnesium bisglycinate from Gadot is fully reacted, chelated and non-buffered, according to the company. Gadot’s CEO, Ohad Cohen, also claims that it differs from other magnesium ingredients on the market.
Due to its solubility, it offers good formulation versatility. Additionally, the company adds that it is easily flavor-masked and has the least metallic taste.
Magnesium is a multi-faceted mineral, as numerous studies have demonstrated its advantages for the health of the brain, nervous system, muscles, cardiovascular system and heart.
Immune function, brain and heart health
The mineral has also been touted for its relaxation and stress reduction properties, which may be beneficial when the ingredient is consumed before sleep. It is a suitable supplement in sports nutrition because, when taken before exercise or competition, it reduces the risk of muscle cramps and thus improves performance.
Customers want holistic wellness products that target both the mind and the body, and magnesium helps with both.
“Consumers are beginning to integrate aspects such as sleep with overall health and wellness improvement, including their mental health,” Cohen says. “And the number of food and drink-related patents featuring cognitive and mental health benefits is increasing.”
Gadot notes that according to research, consumers believe that magnesium supports cardiovascular, immune and cognitive health.
Using magnesium for sleep and relaxation represents a significant market opportunity for supplement companies. Magnesium is associated with facilitating quality sleep by one-third of customers, and the sleep category is predicted to continue expanding quickly, he explains.
Fortification and targeting bone health
Gadot previously introduced Cal2Mag – a mineral blend for bone health. According to the company, the combination of 100 mg calcium citrate and 50 mg magnesium citrate is prepared in a ratio scientifically proven to give long-term bone support.
The company also added its health-promoting minerals, calcium, magnesium and potassium to plant-based milk in its fortification program.
