Skin deep: DSM Venturing invests in skin microbiome research

18 Feb 2019 --- DSM Venturing, the venture investment arm of DSM Nutrition, has made an equity investment in skin microbiome company S-Biomedic NV. This investment completes S-Biomedic’s latest Series A financing round. The skin company is a Belgium based life sciences company that is pioneering “a new approach to cosmetic and therapeutic potential of the skin microbiome.”

14 Feb 2019 --- DSM has reported a “very strong year,” including robust Q4 figures, organic sales growth of 6 percent and adjusted EBITDA up 26 percent, including €290 million (US$327 million) due to temporary exceptional vitamin effects. With Q4 core profit topping expectations, the company has announced that it will buy back €1 billion in shares.

Fermentalg to “ramp up” omega 3 platform following strong growth in 2018

11 Feb 2019 --- Microalgae innovator Fermentalg has reported accelerated industrial and commercial growth across three of its major platforms for the 2018 period, particularly regarding its foray into premium omega 3. The other platforms include protein and pigments and its algal biofilter. The success has placed the company in a prime position to “ramp up its business” in 2019 on the omega 3 platform, according to Fermentalg.

DSM enters US$155m joint venture with Nenter to produce vitamin E in China

31 Jan 2019 --- Royal DSM is set to acquire a 75 percent shareholding in a joint venture with Nenter & Co., Inc in in a move aimed at fulfilling the company’s projected needs for vitamin E. The deal is reportedly set to amount to €135 million (US$155 million). The acquisition will include all of Nenter’s production and related assets for vitamin E in China.

Fixing a broken food system at Davos 2019: Ellen MacArthur Foundation unveils circular approach

24 Jan 2019 --- By 2050, five million people a year could die due to factors related to the industrial production of food – twice the current number of people killed by obesity. This is according to a report, published by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, presented at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos. The current food system has supported a fast-growing population and urbanization, but it’s not sustainable nor is it healthy. The harmful impact of pesticides, air and water pollution necessitate a circular economy approach to the food system, the report notes.
