21/04/05 Experts now agree that it is possible for diabetics to eat desserts on a type 2 diabetic diet.
According to the American Diabetes Association website “…experts agree you can eat foods with sugar (such as desserts) as long as you work them into your meal plan as you would any other carb-containing food.” These guidelines also apply to a range of sweeteners with calories, including honey, brown sugar, and molasses.
American Diabetes Services has a web page featuring your choice of a free diabetic dessert recipe on their website www.americandiabetes.com . The following diabetes dessert recipes can fit with a type 2 diabetic diet: broiled fruits with vanilla ice cream, raspberry mousse, diabetic brownies, lo-cal cheese cake, diabetic fudge, and oatmeal cookies.
Medical experts have increased their knowledge of the causes of diabetes. In the past, diabetics were told to eat no sugar, as experts believed that sugar increased blood glucose and caused diabetes. Recently, experts have come to believe that sugar has a similar effect on a diabetic’s blood glucose level as other carbohydrates, such as bread or potatoes. Diabetics can eat foods with sugar as long as they include them in a type 2 diabetic diet.
