Cranberry protein powder enhances probiotic effect of Sabinsa strain, study finds
26 Jun 2018 --- Research published in the International Journal of Food Science & Technology confirms a symbiotic relationship between Fruit d’Or cranberry protein powder and Sabinsa’s LactoSpore; a room temperature stable probiotic strain of B. coagulans MTCC 5856. This ingredient combination, known as Lacto Cran, also inhibited the growth of pathogenic E. coli bacteria, a common cause of urinary tract infections.
In vitro test results show that Fruit d’Or cranberry protein powder derived from the seed is resistant to digestion and acts as a complete food source for LactoSpore, increasing the viable count of this beneficial probiotic. Researchers noted, “B. coagulans grew very well by utilizing cranberry seed fiber as a sole nutritional source.”
“These two powerhouse ingredients promoted together as Lacto Cran may be the complete synbiotic solution for gut health and beyond,” says Stephen Lukawski, Director of Business Development and Sales of Fruit d'Or.
Available as conventional Cran d'Or and Organic Cran Naturelle, cranberry protein powder is suited for use in applications such as dietary supplements, confectionary (candy, gum fruit snacks, lozenges, mints), cosmetics, smoothies, shakes, baked goods and animal feed.
Fruit d’Or’s cranberry protein powder is derived only from the cold pressing of cranberry seed. Fingerprint analysis indicates that it contains 50 percent fiber; 25 percent protein; 16 essential amino acids and fatty acids such as omega 3, 6 and 9; phospholipids and potassium. Unlike other cranberry protein powders on the market that can be over dried, Fruit d’Or cranberry seed has been standardized to contain a minimum of 2 percent PACs and at least 20 percent protein which is the only fruit protein on the market, according to the company.
“We certainly recognize the growing need in the marketplace for proper prebiotics, and with Sabinsa’s understanding of probiotics, we feel the marriage of both is of prime importance to one’s health,” says Shaheen Majeed, Sabinsa president. “This preliminary study helps set the stage for demonstrating such health benefits.”
