Bioniq acquires Loewi to expand personalized nutrition across globe
31 Jan 2022 --- Personalized health tech company Bioniq has acquired Loewi, a health support platform, in a bid to further its customized nutrition ambitions.
“Joining forces with Bioniq creates a new market leader in continental Europe and brings us one step closer toward our shared mission to make personalized nutrition and health available for everyone,” Adrian Kapsalis, founder and managing director, Loewi, tells NutritionInsight.
Loewi’s technology is based on an evidence-based personalization concept it developed, using a proprietary database of more than 15,000 scientific studies. The database also takes into account 9,000 interactions with diseases, medication and allergies.
As a result, it has guided 95% of consumers to improve their blood data, the company says.
“Through the acquisition, we can roll out the technology behind Loewi on a global scale,” Kapsalis adds. The acquisition is set to promote more growth in the personalized nutrition space.
The financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
Global reach
UK-based Bioniq is a health support platform with personalized science and data-based solutions. Its scientific base helps to analyze and monitor health while offering detailed solutions to each individual. The company offers personalized supplements based on comprehensive blood tests.

“Thanks to Loewi's patented personalization concept, Bioniq’s mission to make health accessible and actionable can now be achieved on an even larger scale,” says Vadim Fedotov, CEO and co-founder of Bioniq.
Currently, Bioniq operates in the UK, the UAE and Russia, while Loewi is described as a European market and technology leader in personalized nutrition. The company has previously carried out research with TU Munich to find out whether deficiencies in micronutrients reveal a correlation with the severity of disease in COVID-19 patients.
Personalized nutrition has been described as the “future” of industry and was ranked as a Top Ten Trend in 2021 by Innova Market Insights.
Expanding personalized science
As a result of the acquisition, there will be no short-term structural changes, Philipp Merk, founder and managing director of Loewi, tells NutritionInsight.
“On the contrary, the team will be expanded and growth and expansion will be enforced,” he adds.
Through the acquisition of Bioniq, High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF) also sold its stake in Loewi.
“HTGF was one of Loewi´s earliest investors and is one of Europe’s most active venture capital investors. It owned a minority stake since 2020, which it has now sold. The majority was still owned by the founders before Loewi had been sold to Bioniq,” Merk explains.
The use of blood testing for personalized nutrition is fast-developing. US-based personalized nutrition company Baze offers an at-home blood collection process, which allows customers to assess their blood nutrient status. The company then analyzes the blood samples to offer nutrition plans and supplement subscriptions specific to individual needs and deficiencies.
