14 Apr 2016 --- BIO-CAT Microbials has launched OPTI-BIOME Bacillus subtilis MB40, a highly-concentrated, shelf stable probiotic ingredient for dietary supplements and food products.
OPTI-BIOME Bacillus subtilis MB40 is BIO-CAT Microbials’ first proprietary strain in their family of OPTI-BIOME probiotic products. It is GRAS via expert panel review and is available for sampling and testing.
At present OPTI-BIOME Bacillus subtilis MB40 is available in the US only.
Marc Jensen, Senior Technical Sales Representative, told NutritionInsight: “We are thrilled to be launching this innovative product this Spring.”
OPTI-BIOME Bacillus subtilis MB40 is a naturally occurring, spore-forming organism which protects itself from extreme pH and heat like the conditions associated with some food manufacturing processes.
This proprietary strain can be encapsulated in a dietary supplement to provide a more diverse probiotic product and support label claims with impressive colony forming units (CFU).
Formulating with OPTI-BIOME Bacillus subtilis MB40 can raise and stabilize the CFU count of products. This is “the best of both worlds” according to BIO-CAT Microbials President, Chris Schuler: “I think our customers will see immediate value in formulating with OPTI-BIOME Bacillus subtilis MB40 as they minimize the need to over-formulate which they had to do in the past because of the limited shelf life of 1st generation probiotics.”
In addition to dietary supplements, Schuler expects customers to begin developing innovative food products containing probiotics since OPTI-BIOME Bacillus subtilis MB40 has been shown to survive extreme temperatures of some food manufacturing processes.
According to BIO-CAT Microbials research, over 80 percent of the food dollars spent by US consumers is on products typically limited for probiotic use due to the processing conditions involved. Now with the development of newly commercial, stable strains like OPTI-BIOME Bacillus subtilis MB40, food processors have a solution to this problem and can expand their product offerings.
“We anticipate our customers formulating it into a variety of foods that do not require refrigeration such as chocolate, nutrition bars, cereals, pastas, and baked goods,” Jenson explained to NutritionInsight.
“Our R&D team is actively working with our initial launch targets to develop unique food products which we hope will greatly expand the way consumers access probiotics.”
“Bacillus subtilis is a shelf-stable, spore-forming probiotic which grows rapidly at 37 degrees Celsius (body temperature) and survives low pH environments as in the human stomach.”
“It is temperature resistant at 80 degrees Celsius as in many food manufacturing processes.”
“We believe that when our ingredient customers compare the stability, growth rates and enzyme production of Bacillus subtilis with other probiotics they will see the clear advantages of formulations including OPTI-BIOME Bacillus subtilis MB40.”
BIO-CAT Microbials has been a producer of Bacillus sp. for over 10 years.
Due to the revolution of information regarding the human microbiome and its importance for human health and well-being, the market is expanding rapidly. Experts anticipate a US$40 billion global market by 2020 which will include many innovative delivery systems and food products on the shelves of mainstream grocery stores.
