Aker BioMarine unveils halal-certified krill oil to expand global reach
19 Aug 2021 --- Norway-based biotech company Aker BioMarine is expanding its ingredient portfolio with a halal-certified krill oil product: Superba SC40. The latest ingredient in its flagship Superba range enables nutrition companies to target new demographics with their products.
“As Aker BioMarine continues to grow globally, we are seeing an increasing demand for a halal-certified product and we believe Superba SC40 is an ideal solution to meet this demand,” says Tim de Haas, executive vice president human health and nutrition at Aker BioMarine.
The ingredient is positioned to address a range of health areas including the heart, liver, skin hydration, as well as muscle activation in sports performance
Halal coming to the fore
The company asserts there is “no question” that the halal certification segment is growing, as the demand for halal-certified products continues to increase.
“With this new specification, we can appeal to a wider demographic of customers and consumers globally both in new and existing geographies,” adds Haas.
Innova Market Insights data highlights that in 2019, nearly one in three new product launches featuring halal claims were launched in Indonesia (30 percent), followed by Malaysia (9.5 percent) and Thailand (9 percent).
Krill oil boasts a unique composition, which includes omega 3s.Same benefits with new certifications
Superba SC40 is a quality krill oil ingredient produced under “strict biosecurity and safety standards” in a halal-certified facility.
Aker BioMarine uses technology that maintains the biological activity in krill oil with high levels of phospholipids intact.
Like other products in the Superba line, Superba SC40 is a quality krill oil ingredient that provides phospholipids with omega 3s and choline, delivering whole-body health benefits.
Diving into krill
Aker BioMarine continues to innovate to bring new krill ingredients to the market.
Earlier this year, the company launched Invi, a krill protein isolate positioned for sustainable F&B applications.
Scaling up its innovation, Aker BioMarine recently enlisted GEA, a food processing technology supplier, to design and deliver the “world’s first” pilot plant for hydrolyzing krill protein, scheduled to launch in 2022.
Moreover, the company highlighted krills’ “sea of potential” last April during the virtual Big Krill Show. Some of krill oil’s distinct advantages include its phospholipid composition, which makes it more water-soluble than omega 3s from fish oils.
Krill oil is also notable for its sustainability credentials. Aker BioMarine’s focus on sustainability inspired the launch of Aion, a circularity company dedicated to helping companies to recycle and reuse waste.
