Bioiberica webinar preview: Inside Hyaluronic Acid supplementation for mobility and skin support
14 Nov 2022 --- Bioiberica delves into the benefits of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) ahead of its webinar with NutritionInsight on November 17 (4 PM CET). The company elaborates on its HA matrix ingredient and its function in boosting the body’s natural supply of the acid for skin beauty and joint health support.
“What sets Bioiberica’s HA matrix ingredient apart from traditional HA is composition. Unlike fermented-origin HA, our matrix ingredient contains a unique combination of three naturally-occurring components – HA, polysaccharides and collagen,” Jaume Reguant, healthcare director at Bioiberica tells us.
“They work synergistically to elicit an enhanced effect compared to traditional HA. For example, research shows Mobilee increases the body’s synthesis of HA in synoviocytes more than 200-fold – much higher than amounts produced by fermented HA at the same dose. For skin health, Dermial significantly increases type I collagen synthesis – an action not observed with fermentation-origin HA.”
Recently, Bioiberica attended SupplySide West in Las Vegas, US, where it showcased the ingredient as an “industry-first” solution for skin care and mobility.
The power of the acid
Naturally produced in the body, HA is present in the joints, skin and other organs for which it lubricates and reduces friction between cartilage while supporting the overall movement in mobility and healthy joints.
In skin health, HA occurs naturally in the dermis and epidermis layers of the skin, where it binds water molecules to collagen, keeping the skin hydrated. Reguant explains that the quality and quantity of HA the body produces typically decreases, which is where supplementation can provide significant benefits in areas like joint and skin health.
“The main format of HA used in nutrition is typically fermentation-origin. There are other formats, such as Bioiberica’s patented HA matrix ingredients – Mobilee, the first HA matrix ingredient for joint and muscle health, and Dermial, the first HA matrix ingredient for skin and beauty.”
Easy formulation
Bioiberica’s HA matrix ingredients are efficient at a low daily dosage – Mobilee at 80 mg/day and Dermial at 60mg/day. Both have “excellent” organoleptic properties and a solid regulatory framework. Reguant says both ingredients are easy to formulate in supplements and functional foods, such as pills and capsules or yogurts and dairy-based drinks.
“This means formulators can successfully tap into a wide range of needs and demographics. For example, Mobilee can add additional mobility benefits to hydrating RTD beverages aimed at active consumers. At the same time, Dermial offers an excellent opportunity to innovate in the growing beauty-from-within trend with convenient and on-trend nutraceuticals,” he details.
HA is established in the skin and beauty space, although it’s gaining traction in mobility and sports nutrition.
“Consumer research shows that 10% of consumers purchasing products to support joint health are specifically seeking HA,” Reguant highlights.
“To cement HA’s position in these markets, educating consumers on its benefits is essential – especially when raising awareness of newer forms, like our HA matrix ingredients. But it’s not as simple as just adding health claims to packaging – to stand out in an increasingly crowded marketplace, formulators should ensure the ingredients they use are scientifically sound – in fact, science-backed ingredients are the top purchasing driver for consumers seeking mobility solutions.”
Mixing with other ingredients
Bioiberica underscores that Mobilee and Dermial can be formulated with other complementary ingredients to support both mobility and skin health.
Reguant says that scientific research shows that Mobilee can effectively combine with native (undenatured) type 2 collagen (Bioiberica’s Collavant n2) to support joint health and mobility. It can also be formulated with other on-trend ingredients that have been shown to support joint health, such as herbal extracts like Boswellia.
“Elsewhere, Dermial’s low 60 mg/day dosage can easily be formulated with well-known ingredients like collagen peptides to support skin health. It can even be formulated with ingredients outside of traditional skin health solutions to tap into emerging health areas – for example, with probiotics to target the gut-skin axis, an area that’s rapidly gaining traction amongst scientific communities and consumers alike.”
“This formulation versatility is key to providing more personalized and holistic products to suit a range of consumer needs with effective and comprehensive solutions,” he concludes.
