Innovative Cranberry Powder Achieves Canadian UTI Claims Approval
20 Jun 2017 --- Fruit d’Or Nutraceuticals has announced that it has received Natural Product Number (NPN #80076642) from Health Canada’s Natural and Non-prescription Health Products Directorate (NNHPD), for their organic cranberry juice powder. Health Canada concluded that Cran Naturelle organic cranberry juice powder is now registered with an NPN claim for the support of a healthy urinary tract.
According to Stephen Lukawski, Director of Global Sales and Product Development, Cran Naturelle organic cranberry juice powder can be marketed in 500mg capsules and can also be promoted as a natural health beverage, which complies with the National Health Products Regulations.
Fruit d’Or’s organic cranberry juice powder is produced using the company’s proprietary drying process PAC-Guard, which results in the protection of higher active cranberry components, such as PACs, deep color, great taste, flowability and dispersion. The organic cranberry juice powder contains organic acacia gum which is a prebiotic fiber that helps guard against degradation of biomarkers such as PACs. The lignans in the acacia gum help protect and transport the PACs through the stomach to deliver to the site of action. This combination is beneficial for both UTI and gut health. Cran Naturelle juice powder contains up to 1% PACs.
Fruit d’Or produces its own cranberries and cranberry concentrate so they can control the quality from farm to factory, seed to table. According to the company, having a one-stop shop prevents the possibility of adulteration and degradation while protecting the health and safety of consumers.
“Vertical integration by Fruit d’Or allows for control of the supply chain and maintains a standardized quality that delivers on the promise,” Lukawski says. “We are excited to offer groundbreaking technology to be able to produce the first-ever standardized organic cranberry juice powder that offers clean labeling for both dietary supplement and beverage manufacturers.
Fruit d’Or organic cranberry juice powder contains no carriers or solvents, such as no maltodextrin and no MGOH. The juice powder is ideal for beverage market as it is 100% water soluble, is low in calories containing only the natural sugars of the cranberry and is considered to be diabetic friendly.
“Consumers are demanding trust and transparency for their nutraceutical ingredients. If the industry turns its back on this trend, we will all lose,” confirms Lukawski. To that end, Fruit d’Or Nutraceuticals is challenging the entire cranberry industry to comply with its Wheel of Quality, which includes criteria met through the Cranberry Quality Assurance (CQA) program.
Fruit d’Or’s Wheel of Quality includes polyphenol fingerprint analysis of starting raw material; DNA testing for authenticity; MALDI-TOF testing for quantification and identification, to help prevent adulteration; standardization of active biomarkers such as PACs and total polyphenols; testing for efficacy through science linking outcome studies to the identification of biomarkers to the fingerprint analysis of the starting cranberry powder.
CQA is a seal of approval that establishes confidence and trust among consumers, transparency of growing and manufacturing procedures, control over supply chain farm to table. CQA raises the bar of quality, setting new manufacturing standards for cranberry ingredients such as their mandatory use of metal detectors for the protection of consumer safety.
“Our attention to quality control aligns nicely with Health Canada’s recent recognition of our organic cranberry juice powder, formulated with acacia gum. Further, the market is looking for transparency and quality control.”
