Food Matters Live 2015 – Insects Top of the Table
25 Nov 2015 --- Insects were one of the stars of the show at Food Matters Live in London, thanks to Eatgrubs stall which offered their new Eat Grub bar, which is hoping to see a launch early next year if their kickstarter campaign reaches its target.
Also on display for tasting were their other products which have gone on sale, including chili and line roasted crickets and edible buffalo worms.
Founders Shami and Neil are passionate about insect eating, saying that it is healthy, a good source of protein and sustainable. For every 10kg of feed one can produce 1kg of beef, or 9kg of locust meat.
They have spent the last couple of years testing the concept of insects as a viable food source with pop-up events and freeze-dried ranges of snacks. On the basis of this, they spent the last year developing the Eat Grub Bar, which they describe as “a healthy on-the-go snack made with cricket flour. We’ve launched (as of 10th November, for 30 days only) a Kickstarter campaign to get the first production run over the line.”
Over 2 billion people worldwide eat insects daily and they are particularly rich in protein due to their cold blooded nature, rendering them far more efficient than warm blooded animals at converting feed into protein.
