Euromed unveils pomegranate extract with one of “nature’s strongest antioxidants” for healthy aging
03 Aug 2023 --- Botanical extracts and natural ingredients supplier Euromed has unveiled Pomanox, a pomegranate fruit extract for beauty and healthy aging benefits, which will be showcased at Vitafoods Asia from September 20 to 22 in Bangkok, Thailand.
The extract is currently in two ongoing clinical trials, the details of which will be revealed at the tradeshow in a live presentation.
“Most of the pomegranate extracts on the market are made using organic solvents, contributing to high extraction yields. Our Pomanox, however, is made using water as the only solvent, yet is still comparable or superior in terms of yield and quality,” Andrea Zangara, head of scientific communication and medical affairs at Euromed, tells Nutrition Insight.
According to Euromed, Pomanox has excellent organoleptic characteristics and water solubility and is created using patented Pure-Hydro Process with ultra-pure water extraction technology – the modern version of a traditional extraction method similar to infusion with a tea bag.
“This eco-friendly extraction process eliminates the risk for residual content of volatile solvents such as ethanol or acetone in the extract, and, for the pomegranate, the potential risks for toxic alkaloids related to extraction with such organic solvents,” he says.
Extraction technology
Pomanox is Euromed’s flagship Mediterranean fruit and vegetable extract based on at least 15 years of R&D. It is manufactured at the Murcia manufacturing plant under strict quality control and full traceability.
“To make an aqueous extract that competes and exceeds in yield with the organic solvents extracts, it is necessary to use the most innovative technologies in purification. The area where this Euromed plant is located is one of the largest producers of pomegranates, reducing transportation and consequently carbon footprint,” explains Zangara.
It is based on physical procedures beginning with the aqueous processing of fruits with ultra-pure water. The extract is then purified using solvent-free techniques until a powder extract is obtained.
“The ratio of the water-soluble compounds as polyphenols is maintained as in the fresh fruit, but more concentrated. Extracts are purified using solvent-free techniques until obtaining a powder extract with aqueous solutions, avoiding releasing potentially contaminant-polluting residues from chemical solvents. Two purification stages eliminate 99% of mineral content from water,” he notes.
Zangara also emphasizes that more than 15 studies with Pomanox endorse its role in supporting stamina, endurance, mood, cognitive functions, gut functions, cardiovascular health and skin beauty.
Minus the mineral residues
The extraction technique eliminates mineral residues that could interfere with extract quality and stability, improving the bioavailability of polyphenols. It also gives the extract thermal stability to pasteurization and baking and a low impact on the final taste and flavor.
“Pomanox is standardized to not less than 30% punicalagin, among nature’s strongest antioxidants. Punicalagins are converted by colonic flora to urolithins, highly bioavailable and bioactive metabolites that circulate in the bloodstream and reach systemic tissues at relevant levels,” Zangara explains.
Pomanox polyphenols can decrease the level of biomarkers associated with oxidative stress and the release of cytokines associated with inflammation. Polyphenol metabolites increase the yield of the synthesis of Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), an enzyme involved in the synthesis of nitric oxide, which is fundamental in the correct vasodilation of the arteries to support multiple health functions.
Vitafoods Asia
Euromed will introduce attendees to the benefits of various botanical extracts and their effects on skin health, cardiovascular health, cognition, joint and muscle function, and the microbiome.
The presentation “Nature’s Symphony: The Harmony of Beauty, Healthy Mind, and Healthy Body” will outline the extensive scientific aspects of Euromed’s Mediterranean fruit and vegetable extracts and how they contribute to healthy aging and beauty.
In addition to the presentation, Euromed will showcase its Spisar and CuberUp botanical extracts derived from spinach and cucumber at the New Ingredients Zone. These are good for joint and muscle health benefits.
Another critical event highlight will be Wellemon, a lemon extract demonstrating good bioavailability and metabolism benefits. It is a water-soluble extract standardized with eriocitrin.
