Weekly Roundup: Monteloeder expands to North American market, Prinova to distribute marine nutrition products in EU

20 Mar 2020 --- In nutrition news this week, Monteloeder took a multifaceted approach to its North American expansion, while Prinova Europe will now distribute Hofseth BioCare (HBC)’s marine nutrition products in the EU. Both Evolva and By-Health released their financial results for 2019. Ingredia can now claim its Lactium brand “may help improve sleep quality” in the Korean market and ExcelVite fortified its commitment to sustainability with a Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certification for three of its nutraceutical ingredients.

Headquartered in Spain, Monteloeder invested in its expansion to North America by establishing US business and warehouse operations, launching a US website and gaining industry certifications. Monteloeder also began forming a distribution partnership with CK Nutraceuticals as its non-exclusive distributor of Nutroxsun and Move!PLX in the US and Canada. The company now offers its customers a personalized digital assessment tool for ingredient and product selection. It has also made its entire personalization and lifestyle performance solution available in North America.

Monteloeder shifted track toward the North American markets.Prinova Europe agreed to an exclusive deal to distribute HBC’s marine nutrition products in the EU. Based in Norway, HBC offers a wide range of protein, calcium and oil products from Norwegian salmon. The company uses proprietary hydrolysis technology to extract nutrients from the fish sustainably, turning offcuts into high-value nutrition products with minimal waste. These zero-waste efforts have been recognized with Friend of the Sea Certification, while its product range is also non-GMO and free from antibiotics, solvents and chemicals. In the meantime, Prinova Europe is working on concepts to showcase the benefits of HBC’s products for Beauty from Within, Exercise Recovery & Energy, Cardiovascular Support and Bone Health.

Evolva released its financial results for 2019, declaring the company had achieved its financial performance targets and increased its full year revenue to CHF11.6 million (US$11.9 million). Its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) went up 47 percent compared to 2018 while operating expenses declined by 24 percent, reflecting a “leaner, focused structure.” Due to its material progress, Evolva forecasts that it is well positioned to launch a new product for the Health Ingredients as well as Flavor and Fragrances market segments.

Chinese health food company By-Health’s 2019 financial year results also indicated revenue growth by nearly 21 percent, amounting to RMB$5.2 billion (US$748 million). Despite these promising figures, the company’s Australian probiotics subsidiary Life-Space largely failed to meet its annual expectations in China. This was a consequence of China’s new e-commerce law, which drove down transactions and product stocking and ultimately had a “huge negative impact” to the Life-Space Group.

BioGaia signed an agreement with child nutrition products company Ethical Nutrition for the latter to distribute the former’s Protectis drops and tablets in Argentina. This comes as Ethical Nutrition is already positioned as a Latin American distributor. Likewise, BioGaia aims to strengthen its foothold in the Latin American market by expanding to Argentina with its clinically supported probiotic. The launch is planned to take place in the fourth quarter of this year.

In brief: Labels and certifications
Lactium "may help to improve sleep quality."Ingredia received a new health claim from the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety for its Lactium brand. Food supplement manufacturers using Lactium at a dosage of 300 mg per day will be able to use the claim “may help to improve sleep quality.” Lactium is a 100 percent natural milk protein hydrolysate that contains a bioactive peptide with relaxing properties. This marks the second health claim for Lactium in Korea, with its prior claim gained in 2008 boasting relief from stress tension.

Malaysia-based ExcelVite gained the RSPO Supply Chain Certificate for its nutraceutical ingredients EVNol, EVNol SupraBio and EVTene. Established in 2004, RSPO is a globally recognized certification standard for sustainable palm oil and palm products that helps the company bolster its commitment to sustainable value chain production. The RSPO certification builds upon ExcelVite’s Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil Supply Chain Certification Standard (MSPO SCCS), a nationally recognized standard aligning more specifically with Malaysian law, which the company obtained last June.

In brief: Launches and releases
INS Farms and NutriScience Innovations partnered to launch Eldermune in two grades, certified organic and conventional. The former company developed the ingredient while the latter will supply it to the dietary supplements and beverage sectors in the North American market. Eldermune combines elderberry juice concentrate for immune support, with Sunfiber, a natural, soluble prebiotic dietary fiber, to enhance the absorption of elderberry’s immune-supporting phytonutrients in the digestive tract.

PolyFructol Plus is the latest product launched by cosmetic ingredient supplier Mibelle Biochemistry. The highly concentrated solution of oligosaccharide inulin is combined with lecithin-derived liposomes, touted as efficiently improving skin hydration. Inulin, which is a natural sugar extracted from the chicory root, helps to preserve the healthy appearance of the skin by balancing its microbiota.
