Ketogenic probiotics? Ketologie launches new supplement to support keto diets
The product boosts the body’s ability to burn glucose and reduces hunger according to the company
23 Apr 2019 --- Keto supplements provider, Ketologie has released a new nutritional supplement that is touted as able to boost ketone levels while supporting gut health. The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, low carb diet designed to produce ketone bodies for energy and other health benefits and has seen increased popularity over the past years. Coined Ketones + Probiotics, the product is a “next-level exogenous ketone supplement,” according to the company and can also curb hunger while providing long-lasting energy. Ketones + Probiotics is available in pineapple and blueberry crème flavors.
“We have developed a nutritional supplement to provide exogenous ketones that focuses specifically on optimizing health via the gut-brain axis,” says Dr. Tracey King, one of the co-founders of Ketologie. “Our Ketones+Probiotics is a first of its kind dietary supplement that is totally different from all other exogenous ketone products on the market.”
“Ketologie's supplement is specifically formulated with resistant probiotics to assist the body’s transition into nutritional ketosis, as well as support the immune and digestion system,” Dr. King adds.
Trending diets like keto and paleo are experiencing a boost in popularity as consumers become more aware of the importance of personalization in nutrition. The influence of this personalization is influencing NPD, as manufacturers look to meet the needs of relatively small consumer bases. Innova Market Insights reports strong growth in the percentage of new food and beverage launches with selected dietary claims (Global, 2017 vs. 2016). Over this period, a 76 percent rise was reported in “keto” product launches (from a small base), a 32 percent rise in “paleo,” a 28 percent rise in “plant-based,” 17 percent growth in “high in protein” and 14 percent growth in “vegan.”
The growing trend toward personalized nutrition is also illustrated by increased consolidation in the industry as demonstrated by Dutch multinational Royal DSM partnering with digital health provider Panaceutics to bring to the market “affordable” products geared specifically towards health and wellness.
Ketones are an alternate fuel source that occur on the keto diet when fat is burned after massively restricting the intake of carbohydrates. Exogenous ketones are a class of ketone bodies that can be ingested via a nutritional supplement and can play a useful role in transitioning to and maintaining a ketogenic lifestyle.
Some of the many diverse outcomes people report when using ketone supplements include:
- Improved “metabolic flexibility” (the ability to burn either glucose or ketones; rather than being limited to only one fuel source).
- Reduced hunger and sugar cravings.
- Stable, long-lasting energy.
- Greater ability to mitigate ‘keto flu’ via management of electrolytes
The Keto Diet has become a highly popular health and wellness regimen in the US, the company explains. The desired keto ratio is 75 percent fat, 20 percent protein and 5 percent carbs. As a result, blood sugar levels are usually controlled and the body becomes very efficient at burning fat for energy.
Ketologie has previously developed all-natural keto diet products such as chocolate, vanilla and strawberry shakes, collagen protein powder, roast chicken and smoky beef bone broths and now the new line of probiotics combined with ketones.
“Our goal is to educate and help people live the ketogenic way,” Dr. King notes. “We are constantly researching and looking for new ways to help people live a happy and healthy life.”
Last year, Ketologie launched a Kickstarter campaign allowing consumers to pre-order the company’s two most popular products (Chocolate and Vanilla) in new, single-serve sachets with collagen as their primary protein source. The company says it is “on a mission to make the ketogenic way of eating easier and more affordable for busy people on-the-go.”
NutritrionInsight has previously reported on the potential of keto as a trending diet that is shaping the market.
Investment and innovation in the keto arena
In February, nutritional and functional lipids manufacturer Abitec Corporation launched an MCT powder on a fiber carrier that is keto-friendly and dairy-free. The move came at a time when the market potential for the company’s portfolio of keto-friendly ingredients, as the diet’s popularity continues to spike.
Late last year, Keyto, a health and wellness company researching the science behind the ketogenic diet, closed a US$2.5 million seed round. The funding will allow the company to expand the research and development of its proprietary gas nanosensor which detects users ketosis state, as well increase its manufacturing capabilities.
Keyto supplies a health program comprised of a “smart” breath sensor that can detect when the body is ketosis – a state in which it burns fats rather than sugars and carbohydrates for fuel – and an app that provides personalized food and lifestyle recommendations based on individual physiology. To use the device, users breathe into the cylindrical device and view the result on the Keyto app, which is delivered as a “Keyto Level.” The higher the level, the greater the state of ketosis and the more efficient the fat burn.
