Applied Nutrition launches low-calorie, sugar-free electrolyte water for sports recovery
07 Dec 2022 --- Sports nutrition manufacturer Applied Nutrition is introducing Body Fuel – a sugar-free, electrolyte water sports drink with less than five calories per serving. The product features UFC star Paddy “The Baddy” Pimblett as brand ambassador.
“Sports drinks containing electrolyte minerals are a convenient way for people to stay hydrated and replenish the electrolytes they lose through sweat while exercising,” explains Gareth Powell, head of product development at Applied Nutrition.
“These minerals are important for keeping the body hydrated, controlling its nervous system and optimizing muscle function, while balancing acidic and basic (pH) levels.”
Body Fuel contains antioxidant vitamins C, E, D and Zinc, as well as a full panel of B vitamins and 250 mg of BCAAs to support recovery. It is batch-tested by Informed Sport, making it safe for professional athletes to use, and available in summer fruits, orange, lemon and lime flavors.
“We have seen a worrying trend of sports drinks boasting ever higher levels of single electrolytes to convince consumers the more electrolytes, the better the product. But in reality, this isn’t the case,” stresses Powell.
Electrolytes after exercise
Applied Nutrition’s pre-workout A.B.E. is reportedly the highest-selling pre-workout supplement in Europe. The company sells its premium sports and lifestyle products – formulated and manufactured at its facility in the UK – worldwide.
“While replacing electrolytes is crucial during exercise, the amount needed to be replaced depends on many factors such as a person’s size, what exercise they’re doing and how much they sweat. The range and quality of minerals and phosphates contained in a replacement electrolyte drink are also vital,” adds Powell.
“Simply overloading the body with a single electrolyte to avoid dehydration is the wrong approach and can be counterproductive, with potential health concerns.”
Applied Nutrition has formulated Body Fuel with 665 mg of electrolytes from many sources, in levels that it considers the “optimum ratio” needed to aid muscle function, rehydration and support most consumers in the widest variety of activities.
In other functional beverage news, Arla Foods Ingredients unveiled a concept functional drink to aid in rehydration and recovery. The RTD sports nutrition solution features Lacprodan SP-9213, a whey protein isolate that the company states can retain functionality when paired with electrolytes.
