Weekly roundup: Lycored awarded for campaign, Support for probiotics in countering depression

Lycored has been named a multiple award recipient of a Silver Stevie Award in Brand Experience of Year – Consumer categories and a Bronze Stevie Award for Engaged Community of the Year – Consumer categories at The 15th Annual International Business Awards today, for their innovative #rethinkbeautiful campaign and Good in Bloom initiative. More than 270 professionals worldwide participated in the judging process to select this year’s Stevie Award winners. In reviewing Lycored’s submissions, one judge shared, “From a Marketing Innovation standpoint, Lycored has made significant strides. The nationwide Letters of Love Tour and a skin health study, published in the British Journal of Dermatology are very innovative from a marketing standpoint especially in the supplement space where the focus is on tapping science and innovation to improve individual wellness. Clearly right marketing direction for a supplement company and should find a way to become more accessible to potential consumers.”

The Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) has brought together its members from across the region in support of promoting healthier diets and lifestyles to consumers in Colombia. Grupo Bimbo, Cencosud, Clorox, Colgate-Palmolive, The Coca-Cola Company, Grupo Éxito, Kellogg's, Nestlé, PepsiCo, Postobón and Procter & Gamble are all participating in the CGF’s Collaboration for Healthier Lives initiative that provides in-store education and advice to customers about nutrition, personal care, physical activity and informed purchasing decisions. The “Give a Healthy Twist to Your Life” program originally ran back in May 2017, reaching 12,000 customers across eight Carulla, Grupo Éxito, Jumbo and Metro stores in Bogotá. This new phase, however, hopes to reach more than 40,000 customers as it expands the program to 37 Grupo Éxito and Cencosud stores in Bogotá and Medellín.

A clinical study conducted in India and published in the peer-reviewed journal Food & Nutrition Research reported that adults with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) showed improvement from co-existing depression when they took a probiotic strain Bacillus coagulans MTCC 5856 (2 billion spores per day); subjects of the study given a placebo did not report the same improvement. This study, Bacillus coagulans MTCC 5856 for the management of major depression with irritable bowel syndrome: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multi-center, pilot clinical study, provides evidence of clinical efficacy of B. coagulans MTCC 5856 in patients experiencing major depression symptoms with IBS and supports the hypothesis that the modification of microbial ecology in human gut by supplementing probiotics may be an alternative strategy to ameliorate or prevent depression. The study demonstrates that consumption of probiotic B. coagulans MTCC 5856 may improve gut symptoms and psychological issues i.e. major depression, sleeplessness, and dementia in IBS. This provides new opportunity not only to help patients suffering from gastrointestinal related disorders but also the patients suffering from extra-intestinal disorders such as major depression, quality of sleep and dementia. Sabinsa undertook this study after Shaheen Majeed, President-worldwide, noticed depression to be commonly reported among subjects suffering from IBS at the time of screening for the first clinical trial conducted on LactoSpore for the treatment of IBS predominant diarrhea and those patients were excluded in the study (Majeed et al. 2016. Nutrition Journal 15:21).
