Weekly Digest: Taiyo's SunCran receives low FODMAP certification, Lallemand to exhibit probiotics

01 Jun 2018 --- This week in nutrition, Taiyo's SunCran Naturelle received certification as a low FODMAP product, signaling its safety for those who struggle with digestive issues such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Sami-Groups Hyderbad's facility that produces tons of Sabina's top-rated nutraceuticals has received official Good Manufacturing Practice recognition. A new sports nutrition drink was launched as result of a three-way partnership between DSM, cycling team SunWeb and BORN. Lastly, Lallemend is set to exhibit its range of probiotic solutions at Probiota Americas and Kellogg's has reported accelerated results for its initiative tackling food security.

In brief: Product and Ingredient certifications
Taiyo’s SunCran Naturelle has earned Monash University’s Low FODMAP certification. SunCran, consisting of Fruit d’Or Naturelle cranberry juice powder and dietary fiber additive Sunfiber, is said to support both gut and urinary tract health; utilizing the dual action properties of the fibrous guar bean and cranberry juice powder. Many high-fiber foods are high in FODMAPs so people with Function Gastrointestinal Disorders (FGID) and IBS struggle with getting enough dietary soluble fibers, which are essential to gut health and regularity. Beginning with Sunfiber, Monash University established a certification program for therapeutic ingredients and has now confirmed that SunCran Naturelle meets the low FODMAP criteria. Thereby certifying the products as safe for FGID and IBS sufferers.

In further certification news, Sami-Group’s Hyderabad, India, facility is now Good Manufacturing Practices certified by NSF International. The plant houses facilities for herbal extraction and nutraceutical preparations and produces top products that supply the global market: Sabinsa’s PteroWhite, BioPerine (black pepper 95 percent), Curcumin C3 Complex, Boswellin and FenuFibers. The company state that the monthly output of key ingredients from the unit is about 15 to 20 tons.

“This third-party inspection and subsequent certification provides our customers with the assurance that the products we manufacture will support their regulatory compliance and quality standards,” says Shaheen Majeed, Sabinsa President-Worldwide.

In brief: Partnerships
The creation of ISO PRO+ – an energy beverage with muscle recovery benefits that contains DSM’s Peptopo which claims to aid faster protein absorption – was the results of a three-way partnership between DSM, Team Sunweb and sports nutrition specialists, BORN. The aim: to maximize the Sunweb cycling team’s performance throughout this year’s cycling season. The team’s cyclists were given the drink to “support their performance during races and their recovery between events.”

In brief: Other highlights
Lallemandis set to exhibit its range of probiotic solutions for gut health, immunity, stress, mood balance and oral health at this year’s Probiota Americas. The company will also present its latest offerings to the specific needs of sports nutrition and kids/teens markets. The exhibition comes amid strong regulatory breakthroughs for the company, including Quality Systems GMP certificates for the company’s two Canadian probiotic production facilities.

Kellogg Company is celebrating reports of “accelerated progress” on its Breakfast for Better Days goals, from its 10th Annual Corporate Responsibility Report. Kellogg’s Breakfast for Better day’s initiative aims to address food security and now touts high returns: 66 million people engaged in the program which was double the annual target and 570 million servings of food donated which was nearly trip the initial goal, for example. The company also stated that they are one of the first to publish its performance against the Sustainable Accounting Standards Board framework.
