Lactose-free dairy: DSM to market cost-effective analyzer
16 Feb 2018 --- February 2018, DSM will exclusively market BIOMILK 300, a compact residual lactose-analyzing device produced by Biolan. For dairy producers, the BIOMILK 300 is a fast, cost-effective and accurate analyzer for quantifying residual lactose levels in lactose-free and lactose-reduced dairy products.
Merel Roes, Global Business Line Manager Dairy Enzymes at DSM, spoke with NutritionInsight: “We see a growing trend toward health and wellness across the industry and this is true for dairy as well. As the trend towards healthier eating grows, so does awareness for topics like digestive health, which is part of the reason lactose-free is the fastest growing segment in dairy. We expect the strong growth to continue in the coming years.”
Consumers are increasingly aware of the health appeal of lactose-free dairy, which is driving rapid growth for this segment. To pace with this growth, it is crucial for lactose-free dairy producers to have an accurate and fast measurement of the residual lactose-level at every moment in their process, resulting in shorter lead times.
DSM has recognized the need among its customers for fast, reliable measurement of residual lactose levels that is also cost-effective, prompting the company to partner with BIOLAN, an innovative company which designs and manufactures analytical solutions based on biosensor technology, to bring BIOMILK 300 to an even bigger proportion of the global dairy industry.
“DSM is very pleased to partner with Biolan to bring this remarkable technology to a wider use within the dairy industry,” says Roes. “Biolan’s expertise with biosensor technology, together with DSM’s strong history as a leading lactase producer and partner in the dairy industry, allows us to meet the growing needs of manufacturers of lactose-free dairy products even better than before.”
The BIOMILK 300 offers several benefits, including having a fast analysis time of fewer than 3 minutes, being cost-effective and accurate with a high sensitivity that can detect and quantify residual lactose levels at less than 0.01 percent. It is also easy to use, requiring no extensive lab skills to operate or any additional equipment to read the results.
The BIOMILK 300 is recommended for use with Maxilact, DSM’s market-leading lactase range. With Maxilact, dairy producers can produce lactose-free dairy products that taste great while achieving lactose levels in products that are lower than 0.01 percent – the future standard in the industry.
“The surge in demand presents a great opportunity for our company,” explains Roes, “We are the leading lactase supplier in the world, and our manufacturing facilities deliver high-quality products with the security of supply.”
“The partnership with Biolan allows us to complement our Maxilact range of lactase enzymes with the BIOMILK 300, a fast and accurate analyzer for quantifying the residual lactose level, meaning we can serve our customers even better. For Biolan, partnering with a global company like DSM means they can reach an even wider segment of the global dairy industry with their technology – a great partnership for both Biolan and DSM,” she concludes.
