Golden spice: Turmeric finds appeal in organic NPD
11 May 2018 --- Touting a vast array of health benefits, turmeric has been trending for quite some months now. The golden spice was one of the standout trends at Vitafoods Europe 2017, and it has since made its way into a wide range of food and beverages launched over the past year. The application of turmeric was a standout theme at this year’s Natural and Organic Products show in London held the end of April. NutritionInsight looks at some of the offerings on show.
Great Stuff Organic
Great Stuff Organic’s latest additions include Super Seed Crispy Bites and Super Seed Crunch. The bites are available in either Matcha & Spirulina or With Turmeric. The crunch in Almond with hemp seeds & raw cocoa or Cashew with hemp seeds & Ceylon cinnamon. A nutritious snack food alternative, based on seeds, nuts and plant-based proteins, they are gluten-free, high in protein and omega 3 fatty acids.
SugaVida
SugaVida showcased its Great Taste Award winning Turmeric Lattes. Launched in February, they are available in Original, Cardamom and Spicy Ginger 300g packs (with 100g and 8g single serving sachets coming soon). Bursting with B vitamins and essential minerals, these healing elixirs (turmeric lattes aka “Golden Milk” was heralded as the healthiest drink of 2017) contain a fusion of the highest grade turmeric, organic black pepper and SugaVida natural sweetener.
Bite Me Tonic
Bite Me Tonic included the golden spice in its Bite Me Immune Booster to Europe. Available in 240ml bottles, the booster is made from an all-natural blend of Manuka honey, organic apple cider vinegar, ginger root, lime and lemon juice, turmeric and cayenne pepper.
Pukka Herbs
Pukka Herbs, known for its teas and supplements, showcased a 7-day Turmeric Brainwave kit. The kit featured bags of turmeric based tea as well as turmeric capsules, aimed at improving cognitive function. According to the company, the organic Turmeric Brainwave uses a unique extraction process to obtain “Wholistic Turmeric” which retains all 200+ active compounds. This ensures a powerful, concentrated extract that maximizes the synergistic benefits.
Matcha NOW
Matcha NOW incorporated turmeric into its matcha drink. At the show, the company previewed its three new flavors, launching in the summer: Ginger & Turmeric, with organic extracts of turmeric, ginger and lemon; Peppermint, with organic extracts of peppermint and vanilla; and a CBD MatchaNOW, with 10mg water soluble CBD. Each no sugar drink holds 2.5g of organic, ceremonial grade matcha powder in the patented twist-cap.
Happy Butter Organic Ghee
Happy Butter Organic Ghee included turmeric in its Ghee product. The company has also just launched a new 150g jar, in addition to their existing 300g jar. The smaller jar, available for both their regular Ghee and Golden Turmeric Ghee, is designed to attract more first time consumers to try Ghee.
Healthy Food Brands
Healthy Food Brands introduced Switchle Sparkling Organic Apple Cider Vinegar drinks. A new addition to the premium adult soft drinks market, they blend sparkling spring water with organic apple cider vinegar with mother, organic honey, fruit juices and botanicals. Flavors include: Turmeric, Ginger and Peach; Matcha, Lime and Mint; and Rooibos, Raspberry and Pomegranate.
Clearspring
Appealing to Innova Market Insight’s 2018 Top Ten Trend “Ocean Garden,” UK company Clearspring presented a range of low-calorie, mineral-rich sea vegetables from both Japanese and Atlantic waters. Among this range was a seaweed snack offering flavored with turmeric. The company promotes seaweed as being naturally high in iodine, helping boost cognitive function and energy metabolism.
