Levels of leucine in whey protein found to have limited effect on post-exercise responses

24 Nov 2017 --- Despite higher-magnitude increases in blood leucine concentrations with native whey, it was not superior to regular whey (WPC-80) when it came to the effect on muscle protein synthesis and phosphorylation of the protein p70S6K during a five-hour post-exercise period. This is according to a study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition.

Lycored to showcase fortified fruit gummies with carotenoid-derived colors

24 Nov 2017 --- Lycored has announced that it is to demonstrate at Food Ingredients Europe this year how its carotenoid-derived colors are perfect for fruit gummies. The global carotenoid supplier will be handing out fortified gummies in six different fruit flavors. Their colors are achieved using Tomat-O-Red (Lycored’s range of reds to pink from tomato-derived Lycopene) and Lyc-O-Beta (yellows and oranges from BetaCarotene).

Synthetic antioxidant l-ergothioneine safe as a novel food for pregnant women and children: EFSA

24 Nov 2017 --- The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies (NDA) has concluded that synthetic l-ergothioneine is safe under the proposed uses and use levels for the groups of the population which had been excluded by the applicant in the original application. Following a request from the European Commission, EFSA confirmed the safety of the powerful antioxidant for groups including infants, young children (i.e. toddlers), pregnant women and breastfeeding women.

Mass media linked to childhood obesity by European task force study

23 Nov 2017 --- A task force from the European Academy of Pediatrics and the European Childhood Obesity Group has found evidence of a strong link between obesity levels across European countries and childhood media exposure. The findings indicate that parents and society need a better understanding of the influence of social media on dietary habits. In addition, health policies in Europe must take account of the range of mass media influences that promote the development of childhood obesity, according to the experts.

Vitamin D levels could help to prevent rheumatoid arthritis from setting in

22 Nov 2017 --- Maintaining sufficient vitamin D levels may help to prevent the onset of inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, research led by the University of Birmingham in the UK has discovered. The research also found that vitamin D is not as effective once inflammatory disease is established because diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis lead to vitamin D insensitivity.

Scientists had previously observed that cinnamaldehyde, an essential oil that gives cinnamon its flavor, appeared to protect mice against obesity and hyperglycemia. But the mechanisms underlying the effect were not well understood.

Fermentalg announces signing of distribution agreement for DHA-rich oils and Q3 2017 successes

21 Nov 2017 --- French microalgae specialist Fermentalg has signed a first distribution agreement for algal oils with specialty chemicals and food ingredients company IMCD Group. The news comes as Fermentalg publishes its business review for the third quarter of 2017, with highlights including its strategic partnership with DIC Corporation in pigments and successfully raising €12.6 million (US$14.8 million) in funds as part of a capital increase.
